Tarek Sharp, Crisp & on Fire... for 3 games...

Well, for three games out of four that is….

Ryan didn’t do much wrong today. He weathered the winners storm in the first two games, took full advantage of the errors deluge in the 3rd and again tried his best to put pressure on the Egyptian in the 4th. But today, it was pretty much all about Tarek’s squash I feel. First two games, the Momenator was on fire, 7m and 9m, 8 winners in the first game for 3 errors, 9 winners in the second for 1 error, plus a stroke.

But in the 3rd, Ryan took the ball a bit earlier, stepped up the court, and managed to squeeze 9 errors out of the Egyptian raquet, who still managed to play 8 winners bless him, 4 for Ryan, with the Australian taking the 3rd 13/11 in 12m, the longest game of the match. Back to the Momenator mode in the 4th though, not a single error from the Australian though but Tarek firing the winners all over the court, fast and furious pace, 8 winners for only 2 errors, 2 winners from Ryan. Tarek was on a mission, and Ryan just couldn’t today contain the firing power…

You can’t have the perfect match all the way through… I made far too many errors in the 3rd , he stepped up a lot in that game. Thankfully I regrouped in the 4th , firing again at the end.

To be honest, I don’t know what happened in the 3rd. How many errros? 9??!! That’s a lot of them, for 11 points… Thing is, when I get in that automatic zone, it takes me a while to get it back when the skill gets a bit shaken. And let me make clear that he played great squash in that game, he made the rallies longer, tested me much more.

In the 4th, I made sure I stepped up the court again, and kept sharp in my attacks again. Thankfully, my shots started to get in again, and my error count dropped significantly.

Having a tournament on your doorstep makes things so easy, if you forget something you just go and pick it up. We also have a lot of people to support us and that a great feeling. And the set up of this event is just awesome, I hope we can have it every year.

I’m through to the 3rd round, and I feel ok. For next round, Rafi, we played in Hong Kong, it is tricky when you both have the same approach, we both played the same game. He is a tricky player I have to keep on my toes at all times…

Ali Farag/Ryan Cuskelly: Highest Quality Match

Like the match Greg/Tarek, most of the rallies were of the highest calibre, and to be honest, I don’t know how most of the shots were played, or retrieved/saved, or/and counterattacked! It started pretty well for Ali-Long-Legs, 3/1, 6/2, 7/4. But if the Egyptian started by finding lovely delicate winners, soon, Ryan got used to the pace, started reading his opponent’s game very well, and slowly clawed back first to 7/8, then to 9/9. It’s anybody’s game at that point, Ryan’s got the momentum and playing out of his skin. But it’s two attacks from Ali, one at the front, on at the back, that give the opener to the Egyptian, 11/9, in 16 intense minutes of ridiculous squash. The second sees an excellent start from the Australian. He is playing exquisite positive squash, 3/1, 4/2. But this time, it’s Ali that makes the come back, scoring incredibly 6 points in a row, with no fault of Ryan who keeps playing great squash, 8/4. Ryan, who has been very quiet the whole match, is definitely not happy with a no let he gets at 9/5 Ali. As he starts to argue, the ref goes “Mr Cuskelly, the rule says you are allowed to an explanation which has been given to you, not a discussion. Please play on”. The Australian is not impressed though, and not happy when he comes out of court, 11/5, another 16m match of great squash! The third will be like the first one, still great rallies, with Ali looking like in control, 3/1, 5/2, 7/3, only to see the Australian patiently eating the lead away, 6/8. But if Ryan slows down the ball nicely to try and frustrate the Egyptian, that one is just too much confident by now, and it’s 11/7 in 14m. Please check the replay on SquashTV, it was a fair, intense and very entertaining squash really.

Ali

The first game was a bit tricky as we had to warm up a few times because of the incredible match before us that lasted 6 hours… I made a point to start well, otherwise I would never have got into the match really, so I’m happy I won the first one, it gave me a good confidence boost.

Then in the second there were some brutal rallies. After that I managed to stay focused and run away with a few points and that gave me a good lead to stick to.

In the third, he was very smart, he slowed down the pace a little. I managed to stay in front of him and thankfully I won in three.

Every time I come to a tournament I try to win it, I don’t think of the final. That’s my goal, but I think of every match on it’s own, every match is tough from the very beginning, the Tour is very deep.

Any player can beat any player at the moment, so I like to take it point by point and game by game. Whoever wins Ramy or Marwan will be a very tough opponent and I’ll just give it my best.
