08-11-12: Going-to-the-Sun Road by Ryan Via Flickr: Glacier National Park RyanGrayson.com Prints of this photo can be purchased in my Etsy Store THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTO... If you're only going to have one road go through the heart of Glacier National Park, it's only fitting if the project is big and the result is stunningly beautiful. This was successfully accomplished in 1932 with the grand opening of the Going-to-the-Sun Road. During my three-month long road trip out west last summer, I just finished a hike through Glacier National Park. I wasn't looking forward to leaving, but I still had my drive out of the park on the infamous road. It was even better that I imagined I could be. Its allure has compelled many filmmakers to shoot footage of the road for their movies. It can be seen in the opening credits of “The Shining,” as Jack is presumably driving to the Overlook Hotel. It also appears in a scene in “Forrest Gump.” In that film, when Forest reminisces with Jenny about running across the United States, he says, "Like that mountain lake. It was so clear, Jenny. It looked like there were two skies, one on top of the other." The footage was of him running on the Going-to-the-Sun Road in front of a lake right after the sun drops below the mountains, when the blue sky still lingers around a bit before turning black. A field of golden grasses swirls around in the wind. I've seen that movie a dozen times and every time I watched that scene, I thought of my own dream of living a nomadic life. I wanted my life to be that simple. Could I find myself in such beautiful places, at such the right time? The road is only 53 miles long, but I stopped so much that dusk loomed with several miles left to drive. I wanted one last photo of the sunset. I looked up at the sky anxiously while I drove and searched for the perfect spot. There wasn't much time left. The road took a bend to the right, then left, and I saw the scene above. The section of road was under construction, so I parked my beaten down Honda between bulldozers on a makeshift parking lot made for the construction vehicles. I grabbed my camera. Since I felt like I might have been trespassing, I sprinted up the road and through the field until I was standing in the best spot. I was in the right place, at the right time. The anxiety of not getting a good photo before sunset melted away. I felt satisfied with the images now hidden away in the camera that I clutched to my chest as I ran back to my car. I drove out of the park that night and headed toward my next adventure. More stories and photos at RyanGrayson.com

A woman can move all she wants in the sheets. If she isn't there for anything more than the theatrics, then we're not making love, we're fucking. We're acting in a manner that imitates lovemaking, but there's no connection, just skin. It's more exhilarating to experience your soul rather than just your epidermis. I truly want to see you naked. So lay yourself down in front of me, spread your feelings wide open. Let me kiss your scars and caress your dreams. Kiss my ears with your sounds of love and hate, joy and despair. You're used to a hand over your mouth but not tonight. Let it all flow out of you as I come in, so I can see what's on the other side of those eyes. I want you to show me the stars and galaxies you possess that create a light that consumes your entire presence. It's blinding, but I can't stop staring. Let me pull on your thoughts, I want to be transparent with one another and be consumed by your luminescence. Together we will shine too bright for this world. Merging ourselves for the brief eternity we share with each other will glare out the sun, and we're the entities that discovered it.

(2:17 a.m. Cigarette)
I don't want you in my life, 2:17 a.m. Cigarette. Your amber glow is not welcomed here anymore. My land of dreams will not be disturbed by your ember. Burn a hole in someone else, 2:17 a.m. Cigarette. The lighter's glow tells me you'll be here soon to kick in the door, save the nicotine receptors from the manic state they're about to be in. You're truly a hero in the morning edition of the daily addiction. Extra! Extra! Read all about it! You know the burning rafters will give in soon, they can't withstand much more, only a matter of time before you can't tolerate the screaming of your brain before you rescue it from this torment. Go ahead, let your lungs share your poisonous treason with the rest of your temple. 2:33 a.m. Regret, there's wreckage here for you. Won't you stay a while 2:33 a.m. Regret? Stick around, 2:34 a.m. 2:35 a.m. 2:36 a.m. 2:37 a.m. 2:39 a.m. Sorry, it took me a minute to light my cigarette. Good morning 2:43 a.m. Cocktail. Is it time for you already? Goodbye awakened state, I'll see you again on the purple plains of the morning. Don't come looking for me again, you guys aren't welcome here anymore good night early morning vices. Good morning inebriated sleep. -Ryan Grayson

Expect less, enjoy more, Run free while standing still. Lets go! We will be...somewhere doing...something, Enjoying the spaceless gaps between our minds. Lets go! As long as we can smile at each other and laugh at ourselves, we have conquered space and slowed time - there will be no shadow in our light. So come on, let's go.

Oh what great power she has... her smile could set the world on fire, her hips could swing us out of orbit, her laugh could cause the earth to quake and she could lull the world to sleep with her song. And yet her smile only makes me smile, her hips pull me in for the dance, her laugh confirms my happiness, and when she sings my eyes fill with tears for the destruction she brings to my world. I must be dreaming... Oh what great strength I must have.
