“I had to push you away the most.” Ryan went on, his voice more quiet than before. “There was a lot of things going on. I knew that you would allow me to talk and you would pry and I can’t keep anything from you…”
“Oh, so it’s my fault now?”
“No.” Ryan sighed, “Anna, listen to me-”
“No, you listen to me.” Anna interrupted, turning her body to look into his eyes for the first time since he has been back. “You were my best friend. I needed you for the past year and you completely ignored all the times I tried. I have a right to be angry.”
Ryan opened his mouth, but then closed it. For a little bit, they are both completely silent. Anna knew she had made her point, and Ryan knew the point was right. The only sound around them was the crackling of the embers.
Finally, he whispered, “You’re right. I should have stayed.”
