Song Review: The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis - “Concerto for Cootie” (Live, Oct. 12, 2019)

For four minutes on Oct. 12, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis became the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Ryan Kisor.

Kisor was the featured trumpeter on JLCO’s rendition of Duke Ellington’s “Concerto for Cutie” and did the Duke and Marsalis - who didn’t play a note, instead letting his bandmates’ flawless performance wash over him - right.

Soloing with and without a mute, Kisor elicited two spontaneous rounds of applause when he took pauses and the band carried on. Brushed drums and tempered brass filled the spaces between Kisor’s sassy turns in the spotlight, likely leaving the audience more well-rounded musically than it was when it arrived for the most-recent “Live From Here” broadcast.
