(( 3: Firm Kiss it is then! ))
“Where are ya goin’?”
Dani, or rather, Mori as he knew them then, glanced at the young man in the room, perched on their sofa with a joystick in his hand. He was in a very casual state of undress, shirtless and in briefs, now a comfortably settled addition to their apartment in this particular, notorious part of London. He knew all the key codes and locks and had the keys, the only thug they trusted them with. He wouldn’t break away with the expensive game set he was currently using and he definitely wouldn’t take from a stash of money they kept under lockup in a safe behind the minibar. He would take from the minibar though, but that was fine.
He paused the game of Mortal Combat he’d been so focused on for an hour now, dark gray eyes watching them put a leather jacket on. They were a perfect match, appearance-wise, copy-paste versions of themselves except one was petite and more deceptively feminine and the other tall and broad-shouldered. They both drove fast vehicles and dressed in black leather, had a penchant for trouble and a need for danger. They knew him well just by knowing themselves. And they knew that curious expression too. He was about to ask questions - ones they very much minded answering.
“Out, obviously. For work.” Sparse with any further info than that, Mori searched for their car keys, having not found them yet at three out of five most likely placed they’d leave them at.
He was staring at them and they could see the exact expression his face was adopting without actually looking at him. He wasn’t a dumb bloke. He noticed things. How they would disappear sometimes for days on end and not even return messages or calls. How sometimes they returned covered in bruises. How well they were off despite not having an official job. The hushed conversations on their cell phone, going into another room and closing the door whenever it rang. An occasional knife in their wardrobe, the gun in their nightstand drawer.
Mori knew he didn’t mind all those things. All he wanted to do was help however he could. If they told him that they were a trained assassin getting ready to off the Queen, he probably wouldn’t blink twice. He’d probably just calmly tell them that this was a stupid profession likely to get them killed. And that would be the end of it. Still, Mori wasn’t sure why he sometimes looked like he really wanted to know more. That part of him was unreadable. Was he worried about their safety? His own? Was it bothering him that they kept some secrets even he wasn’t entitled to know? Was he curious? Was he in love and afraid for them?
Whatever it was, it was beyond Mori. All they could do was sigh quietly as he kept on staring. “What?” Impatient, they tapped their foot against the floor, hands on hips.
“Nothin’.” He responded, tossing the joystick away and standing up to stretch his arms over his head. Something in those broad, inked shoulders cracked as he reached for the ceiling. Mori started biting their bottom lip, looking at the floor, thinking up another lie, another defensive ‘what do you care’. Another nonchalant shrug accompanied with reassuring words that ‘it’s no biggie, it’s just work’. Another joke about them secretly being a superhero, off to save the world. Or a supervillain off to destroy it.
And while they thought about it, he’d reached them, cupping their cheeks and making them look up. “Babe.”
Oh no. Here it is. The ‘I can’t do this no more’. The ‘it’s not fair’. The ‘what the fuck is going on’. They couldn’t deal with it. Not now. Not ever.
“Whatever it is, keep yerself safe.”
This surprised them. For all his hotheadedness, all his impatience and dumb reckless behavior, he still managed to surprise them with a wise sage moment, with patience and understanding Mori rarely found in others. How nice it was to imagine it was out of love. How nice to think that he’d curb his temper only for them. But they never really discussed love, least if there was some between them. It was easier that way. Mori could continue with their secrets and Ryden could still be a reckless mess with no obligations towards anyone.
Mori opened their mouth to retort something, something witty and dismissing but he shut them up with a kiss so firm it hurt their lips and the teeth behind them. They were red when he pulled back, blood pulsing through them as if they were smacked right over their mouth.
“Be safe.” He repeated and although he delivered a playful spank to Mori’s butt as he passed them by to go to the kitchen, they could still feel the heaviness of the words behind them and the weight of someone caring, someone waiting for them to come back home. Someone who would stay up at night and check their phone constantly. For the first time, Mori didn’t feel like leaving the apartment. They wanted to stay and never be done with it, never do it again. But it was not something they could just walk away from. Glancing away and staring at nothing in particular, their car keys finally came into view. So there the fuckers were all along.
They rubbed a hand over their face, just standing there for a moment, listening to the sound of the tap running in the kitchen. They finally moved, grabbing the keys and walking out the door, just missing Ryden leaning against the kitchen wall, watching the front door click closed.
