“I’m just saying it’d be a waste of such a good song.”
Dani shook their head, resting their hands on their hip and laughed quietly. “You’re clearly drunk,” they said, smiling fondly at Tuah’s outstretched hand, asking them for a dance. “Come on. That’s enough of fairy wine for you.”
“Just tipsy,” Tuah countered, raising his glass above his head and taking a few steps back so his drink was out of reach, “and it’s not fairy wine, it’s witch blood. Less effect. Sort of.” He finished his drink in one go and placed the glass on the table, grinning triumphantly at Dani before reaching for the bottle to pour him another drink. “Your father has great taste, and it’ll be a waste to simply store it away.”
They heaved a sigh and slung their hands in front of their chest, tilting their head as they watched Tuah quietly. “Alright, I’ll bite. What’s the occasion, then? And why are you getting drunk - tipsy - getting tipsy alone?” A pause as Dani scrutinised their friend. “Something happened?”
The glass hovered in front of Tuah’s lips for a moment before he finished a drink, but it was long enough for Dani to pick up that something was amiss. Concern now filling their heart, and they closed the distance between them. “Tuah,” Dani quietly called out to him, their hand reaching out and rested on his arm, “what happened.”
Tuah let out a laugh, hollowed and broken, and it raised alarms in their head. He glanced towards them, the smile that painted on his lips seemed out of place somehow. He opened his mouth, but there were no words coming out. He looked away, furrowing his brows tightly together. Dani waited until Tuah was ready, imagining the cogs turning in Tuah’s mind.
“I’m a mess, aren’t I?” the question was not directed towards them, so Dani didn’t answer. “But I promise I’m alright. Or, I will be alright. Not right now, though. Right now, I’d very much like to have a dance with you.”
“Oh come on. Just this once? I didn’t get to dance with you at your wedding, you know, and it pisses me off until now.” He knew he had no right to complain, but he didn’t care. “Please? I’m your adopted father. You adopted me. Or was it Fane?” He paused, narrowing his eyes and furrowing his brows. “Maybe I adopt myself. Wait, that doesn’t make sense, does it?”
Dani heaved a sigh, a smile on their lips. How could they say no to the old vampire? He was like a father to them as much as Fane was. “Yeah, sure,” they relented, “but only one dance.”
“Promise.” Tuah raised his hand in a mock salute before offering it to Dani. “Now, may I have this dance with you?” Tuah flashed a cheeky smile at them, to which Dani rolled their eyes and took his hand anyway.
It wasn’t even a dance, they simply swayed side to side in the middle of the living room, the song slowly faded into the background and change to another track, and still the continued to sway gently to the music. “Thank you,” Tuah spoke quietly, as if afraid to break the spell, “for allowing me this.”
“Fathers deserve to dance with their daughters every once in awhile,” Dani smiled as they looked up at him, before it wavered when they remembered Tuah’s expression earlier. “I don’t know what’s happened to you, but I’m here for you.”
“I know,” Tuah nodded his head, visibly taking a deep breath and let it out slowly. “It’s just uhm, old memories are resurfacing more often than I can suppress them.” Tuah was never one to talk about his past, and they had never pushed him either, not wanting for him to relive the pain of his past. “I was taken away when it was summer, so... the days haven’t been kind to me lately.” A pause, then Tuah continued, “I had Iann to comfort me before, but -” Another hallowed laugh, “well I can’t exactly ask for his help about this, can I.”
They stopped, and Tuah was casting his gaze on his boots rather than looking at Dani. “Sorry, didn’t mean to sour the mood.” They could see he was retreating back, having spent enough time with the old vampire to know when it was about to happen. So Dani did what a good friend would do.
They reached out for Tuah, hands cupping on either side of his face. He was still given a way out, though they had a feeling that he wouldn’t. When Dani felt no resistance they pulled him down and pressed their lips onto his forehead, their thumb wiping away the brimming tears from his eyes. “You didn’t spoil anything, Tuah. I told you that I’m here for you, didn’t I?” They pressed their lips onto his forehead again, and Dani felt him leaning into their touch.
They stayed like this for a moment, Dani pressing their forehead against Tuah as they swayed a little. It wasn’t a dance, but it was something to do while they let Tuah enjoy their company. They didn’t think it was much, but perhaps this was what Tuah needed; a little dance and forehead kiss to spell away from the bad memories.
