Chapter 3 I did not get a chocolate ice cream with rainbow sprinkles, for the record. I got a cotton candy flavor cone. Axel got a vanilla cone, and Ryder got a pistachio cone. We decided to walk around instead of sitting, since we all got cones and what were they for if not for easy travel.
We walked to this park with a little duck pond, or it could've been a puddle, who knows lol. Stopping near a bench to take in the scenery, Ryder asked me to sit with him on the bench. "Sure, I don't exist anymore. Have fun with your new queer best friend. I'll just be over there making ripples on the pond, if you need me, that is", Ax playfully threw a tiny branch at Ryder. He just scooted over, giving more space for Ax to sit. I really liked these brothers. There didn't seem to be any kind of actual jealousy or envy whatsoever. They seemed so carefree.
I laughed, "Hey, hey, I'm not gonna steal your brother, Ax. Oh, um, is it fine if I call you Ax?" Axel's face practically glowed, "Of course! Didn't know you got comfortable with me that fast." "Well, for one, you're my roommate, two, you got me ice cream, and three, you accepted me for who I am. Obviously, I got comfortable with you. Just look out for random facts at random times." Ryder was typing on his phone. "Looks like my roommate is here. And our timetables too." I checked my phone, and yes, we got our timetables for the year. "Whoa, I don't have math in the mornings, awesome! Wait, one-hour lunch breaks? Let's go!"
Ax was glaring at his screen like it had killed his entire family. "English first thing in the morning? Why?" he grumbled. Ryder and I started laughing. "Not funny, guys. I'll be asleep for the rest of the day if I have to go through English right in the morning." "Don't worry, man. You'll be fine. Anyway, I think it's time we headed back to the dorms. My new roommate is waiting. He says he doesn't like the new decor." Ryder glanced my way. "Oh, well, maybe he just didn't like how it was placed. Maybe it's not a big deal." Ax looked confused for a moment, then understood what we were talking about. "You want us to help you talk it out with this guy?" Ryder looked worried, "Yeah, i could use some help, I guess. Thanks, guys. Let's go now."
I was so not liking this new dude already. Well, at least he told Ryder about how he felt instead of just tearing the flag down. Once we got to Ryder's room, we braced ourselves for the impact. Ryder knocked on the door once. No response. Then a little shuffling. Then the door opened, and the new guy was on the floor. We were so stunned, we just stared at him blankly. He stared back at us until it got a little too uncomfortable and propped himself up against the wall. "Well, come inside." Ryder hesitated for a second, then walked in, looking around to see if his flag was taken down. Instead, just as I had said, he just didn't like how the flag was placed, so he moved it to the space in between the two beds to give more space for the tiny little flags to go around it, making it look like a queer explosion happened on the wall.
'Oh, 'Ryder and I sighed. "I thought you were homophobic", Ryder managed to say. "What, me? Ha ha, no. I'm queer too. Just too many labels, so I just put all the flags up there, heh." "Wow, I can see that, I said, looking at the rainbow wall. "Why are you on the floor, though?". The new guy painfully got up and sank into a nearby chair. "Name's Riley, Riley Page. Pleased to meet you all. Also, look up." Ax tilted his head upwards and nearly toppled backwards. I looked up, too, and it was breathtaking. He had put up a lot of string lights, streamers, and glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling. Ryder looked too and stood transfixed. Riley chuckled. You guys are easily impressed. Oh, uh, Ryder, hope you don't mind all this. Just thought I could add some flavor to this space, y'know?" Ryder let out a laugh, "Mind it? I absolutely love this. I don't know why I was so scared." "Scared? Oh makes sense now. Don't worry, you're good. Also, who are you guys?" Riley asked, pointing at Axel and me.
"Oh, yeah, sorry. Introductions. This is Axel, my brother. And this is Adrian Hedge, his roommate." "Hello! You people seem cool. Feel free to hang out here whenever you want. I don't mind company. Just try to bring snacks whenever you can." Riley actually shook out hands individually. "You still haven't explained why you were on the floor", Ax pointed out, grinning. "Well, I fell down from the chair, 'cause your knock startled me. I'm fine now, I hope."
