Chapter Title: “ghosts in the day”

Excerpt:

One moment, Sakura stands at her apartment, looking out the small window by the sink. In the next, she’s taken someplace else.

Somewhen.

Like that’s even possible.

It isn’t the first time. Ever since that one fateful encounter in the winter, it had taken up her dreams, her waking moments, haunting her like ghosts in the day. A stubborn hope dwells inside her as the days drag on, that everything will fade into the wind’s course and pass in haste, but months later, it remains as heavy as it is the previous day, grabs her by the throat when she least expects it. Sakura wonders if this has become her norm. If she needs to let herself be accustomed by it.

A part of her believes it isn’t.

Chapter Title: “the first thought of change” Excerpt:

It is unusually quiet at the library today.

Most days, pages are being turned, the murmurs of students bounce back from the far corners; there is a quiet hissing of arguments, the level pronunciation of words just learned. Some days are chaos—books fall to the ground, groans echo, papers fly past, Umeda-san’s heels click; the buzz of electricity as lights switch on during a day of storms.

Today, Sakura’s heartbeat fills in the silence.

It doesn’t ache today. Her heartbeats are solid, but it doesn’t burst out of her either, not like those times of budding passion or anger. Only the type of beat that’s enough to capture her anticipation, curiosity—of finally getting the answers she’d been asking for days.

“H-Here.”

The hands of the boy in front of her trembles slightly as Sakura looks down. If it had been a busy day, she wouldn’t have even noticed it. Yet, as the coolness from yesterday’s storm sets inside the area, the little tremors sober her from all the stirring she’d felt for days. She’s already known whatever it was that was waiting for her—what else could she expect to find in the library anyway?

And yet, he runs. He always does.

When a stranger starts to show up in Konoha, his camera at the ready for landscapes and skies, and acting as if they’d already met before, Sakura tolerates him at best and is on guard at worst.

But is it really this easy to get close to someone new?

Chapter Title: “nothing more”

Excerpt:

It’s still Wednesday, but all of it is gone in a blink.

She sighs, closing her eyes.

Is there time? She feels there still is. She got up earlier than usual, even though her shift doesn’t start until noon. It annoys her to no end that whenever she tries to gain a bit more minutes of rest, she always ends up sleeping for hours. Before she knows it, it’s already fifteen minutes before her shift starts. Hence why she makes the decision to get up, even though she has only rested for four hours. Maybe even two.

She squints at her wall clock as it reflects the light from her window. She can’t really go through a day without her go-to beverage—especially with work that never seemed to stop piling up. It’s like the way Shikamaru refuses to start his day without his coffee. Or even the way Sai needs his ink, capped at full. Naruto, and his ramen supply in almost all of his shelves in his apartment, fully stacked before he leaves for his mission.

Sasuke, and his brother’s sword sheathed behind him.

Kakashi, and the book he’d always tuck inside his back pouch when they leave the gates.

At the thought, she stills. She has to stop going that way.

Chapter Title: “a thing called hope” Excerpt:

The first thing Sakura feels is the light from the sun as it hits her window, absorbing everything it catches through the spaces. Her ears open to the choruses of the songbirds, floating above and into the quiet corners of her room, and she frowns—squints her eyes and thinks of falling back into the clouds of cotton beneath her head, ones she had bought for last winter.

There are taps on her window—persistent, uncontrollable—sounding like fingernails on glass, and sleep walks away from her, leaving, absorbed by the light making its way to her skin.

Mornings, she thinks, she groans, as she lifts herself, dragging her feet to her light-curtained window, sliding it open for a messenger bird with a scroll tightly wound on its twig-like foot. Its wings flap aloud, and it wakes her, has her heart racing. It had been weeks since messenger birds have been sent to her, and every time they arrive, there is a kindle, a spark, a thing that tells her that this might be it. That this might be what she had been waiting for.

A thing called hope.
