“You make a new one. A home, I mean,” Lex answered candidly, understanding better than most what exactly Ryland had meant by his statement, as well as having his own personal experiences with growing up in a literal hellhole that left its own scars on him.
“One where none of that shit matters and nobody from your past can get to you anymore. It ain’t an easy thing to do, but if you wanna stay alive and are willing to fight for it, it sure as shit beats the alternative.”
"Dunno if I even know how to do that.” He had never had one, not really. A lifetime of abuse and bloodshed had left him with no concept of it. Years spent living out of a truck and avoiding where he grew up as much as he was able to made it hard to even think about putting roots down anywhere.
