Q and A with Rym Kechacha
To kick off our new Spring Series, Spiritas is talking with interesting and inspiring individuals about how they stay fit and healthy. Our first interview is with writer and teacher, Rym Kechacha.
Tell us a little bit about yourself…
I’m a teacher and writer. I write about dance, short stories and I’m working on my first novel.
What is your take on being fit and healthy?
I consider myself completely allergic to exercise, but I try to be active in different ways. I cycle to and from work each day, using quiet routes through residential areas that mean I get to enjoy being on my bike without fearing for my life. I’ve been practising yoga for about eight years, and I love long walks.
What has staying healthy taught you about yourself?
You can train yourself out of unhealthy habits. There’s cool science behind this: the bacteria in the digestive system crave what you usually give them. If you start to pack your intestines with fibre instead, the balance of the bacteria will change and you’ll start craving cabbage instead. Crazy, but true.
What are your health rituals? What things/practices/people helped you the most?
Fruit and vegetables are wonderful and I love them. All of them. The world of plants gives so many gifts to humanity and I’m so grateful. I’m a vegetarian, leaning towards becoming vegan, and I can get quite evangelical about it! Even just reducing meat consumption makes a huge difference to the body and the planet.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned about health so far in your life?
Getting outside is the easiest way to improve my mood and well-being, even in winter. Although living in a huge city can be tough to find a connection to nature and the turning of the seasons, it’s so important just to notice the times of day that the sun is rising and setting, or the movement of the leaves as they bud in the spring and fall in the autumn. I’m always hugely inspired by seeing some little dandelion struggling through a crack in the concrete, growing and thriving despite its challenges. Wherever you are, nature is there too.
What does staying fit and healthy look like for you now in your day to day life?
Salted caramel chocolate seems to be very trendy at the moment, so I’m trying to ration myself when it comes to that. I love to cook, and so I try to make time in the day to make something really nice and experiment with recipes. I often make big batches of things and freeze them in portion sizes, as freezing is the on of the best methods of preservation to keep the nutrients in.
What is your favourite song/artist/album/playlist to work out to?
I like putting on some nice Kora music (an African harp) when I’m doing yoga in my living room. I used to be a ballet dancer, so it feels strange to me to move without music of some kind. When I’m cleaning, which we can all agree can get quite strenuous, I put some disco or funk hits on. It helps.
What are some of your #spiritasrecommendations?
Coconut yoghurt. It’s a bit expensive but delicious.
What projects are you currently working on, and looking forward to most?
I’m currently finishing my Masters in Creative Writing, which has been a wonderful experience, and spending lots of time in the fictional world of my novel.
