i made a terrarium following this tutorial in Oct 2024! it looked like this! it’ s my first terrarium and surprisingly hasn’t died yet despite being so small (it’s an 8 oz? maybe 10 oz pesto jar). it looks pretty different today, id like to post some highlights from over the months and what it looks like today
my algae is bleaching and weird little strip of moss is dying.. how strange!!! 1st pic is algae as of Oct 1st 2025.. 2nd pic is algae in july 2025. while its still p hot dueing the day, nights and mornings are colder. i wonder if she is cold
can’t overemphasize how horny this moss is for sunlight… gone from disorganized to a strict 45 degree angle as soon as i get it in front of a window full of indirect sunlight
at one point there was a 3rd springtail species (round springtails) and they were soooo cute. so bummed they didnt last too long !!

The big patch of moss on the right side of the image browned pretty significantly by December ‘24. i removed most of the browned moss; it was quite dry to the touch despite constantly adding more moisture the weeks prior to taking it out. i wonder if it just failed to acclimate, or maybe it was too crowded?
i left in any little green or greenish specks i could find, and some of it has definitely grown back! some of the fat wormy moss has also browned, while other fat wormy moss has grown quite tall!
oh its so hard to see but there are little baby mosses growing on the black rocks!!!! SO exciting!!
today i will open the terrarium and wipe down the walls a little bit because i wish to Peer through the glass. i will remove a little bit of algae perhaps, but mostly just clean debris bc i dont want to drastically change how the light enters the glass.
2 little springtails rotate around a green algae sun!!!!
