swimming.

Before anyone else, the sea was her father’s first love. Although she never knew her mother, the sea clutched her tightly in its grasp after she fell from her father’s boat. It’s nice to be held so dearly, but she considers herself incredibly fortunate the sea let go. There’s no animosity between the two of them. Water is a harsh mistress, but it is fair. It doesn’t play favorites. Una regards the ocean as if it were her actual mother. Why should she want to be separated from it? When Una swims, she feels that special bond with the water. It’s second nature. It’s where she belongs. 

On a less fanciful level, cool water gives her clarity. With the way her mind is constantly racing a mile a minute, she could really take the time to slow down. Swimming provides her with that. It’s a way to get more intimately acquainted with her thought processes instead of just standing numbly as her thoughts pass her by. At swim competitions, her body goes on autopilot, allowing her to retreat into the depths of her mind.

hobbies.

Una can go days or even weeks without any social interaction as long as she has a steady supply of books. Manga, novels, textbooks, anything. It doesn’t have to be well-written as long as it’s interesting. Even so, when the cabin fever finallys gets to her, she’ll usually strap on a pair of skates or go for a run. As great as it is to touch worlds only her mind can reach, what comforts her most is being in motion. She hates to be pinned down in one location for too long. With skates, she feels free as a bird, even if she can’t “fly” for very long. 

If one were to search deep within the depths of the internet, they would find home movies made by Una and her friends back in Izumo. Though hammy, Una is actually a capable actress and enjoys it immensely. It’s just another form of escapism for her, the opportunity to shrug off her shackles and try on a new robe. Because she doesn’t have very many friends (especially close ones) in Tokyo, she’s taken a much greater liking to small-scale acting: cosplay. There’s just something invigorating about analyzing a character and imitating their persona while literally wearing their shoes. If one were to search deep within the depths of the internet, they would find her cosplay website.

“A Nobori never takes on a debt he can’t pay.” These words are often uttered by Una’s father, the man she idolizes above most others. Incredibly charismatic and witty, Kazuki is skilled at charming others into doing him favors or lending him money. He intends to return all of this, of course. Eventually. At the moment, however, he’s on the brink of financial ruin, taking on new debts just to pay old ones. Although she’s unaware of this, it was actually a major factor in his decision to send her to Tokyo to stay with her uncle. 

While Una knows they aren’t very wealthy, they’re getting by, and for her, that’s enough. As far as she’s aware, her father is an honorable and noble man–someone to aspire to be like. She tends to quote his oft-repeated phrase, keeping careful record of favors owed and received. Besides her part-time jobe at the cafe, Una often takes on small, one-time jobs for supplumentary cash to help pay her tuition at Raira and to give herself pocket money. Honestly, she’s a lot more responsible than he is.

   Aoba wouldn’t necessarily say his relationship with his father is a “bad” one, but he wouldn’t say it’s entirely “good” either – and prefers to pretend he doesn’t exist altogether.

   That said, he has plenty pictures of himself with his mother, however – the ones that were taken with Ran and their father in the past have been altered so they’re [his father & Ran] no longer visible.

    “Huh?” Ryuu sat up in his bed, “What was that?”

    Ryuu slid his textbooks to the other side of his bed and made his way towards his bedroom door. The house was pitch black, save for whatever light managed to make its way in from the outside. With his hands, he felt his way through his living room and towards the front door. Peering through the window next to the door, all he could make out at his doorstep was a shadow. “It’s the middle of the night, who’s visiting at this time?”

    He ran through a list of people that knew where he lived in his head. “Family: no. Classmates: no. Neko: yes. Aoba: yes.” But it was 3 a.m. and Neko only (rarely) came over during the day.

    To Ryuu, that left only one person. He opened the door and let his green eyes adjust to the lighting–just to make sure that he had the right person.

    “Oh, its you.” Time to add another person to that list. What a disappointment. He was all geared up to rush Aoba in from the dark and humid night, only to have Mikado be at his doorstep instead. Ryuu wondered what the younger boy wanted at such a late hour but pushed the thought aside. There was a more important question at hand, “How the fuck did he get my address?”

        There was something magical about the world when it was wet. It was amazing how just a few droplets turned everything dingy and grey. People feared the same happening to them, and thus umbrellas were a valuable commodity highly susceptible to theft. Una felt firsthand that day the effects of it all.

        It had actually taken her a while to recognize the other teenager. She didn’t think him forgettable–the rain had caused her mascara to start running, temporarily blinding her. Her eyes stung, and wiping away the foul goop only made her vision marginally better. The dark streaks made her face look more than marginally worse. It was only when they were just over a meter from each other that she realized who she was approaching. 

        His presence surprised her. After all, it was highly unlikely that he’d brave the weather just to visit Negi. There was no way he loved the dog that much. She couldn’t figure out why he was headed in that direction. “Did your umbrella get taken too?”

        His answer didn’t actually matter. What counted was that the two of them were equally soaked. “Horrible, isn’t it? But you know, the one wonderful thing about the rain is the way it actually makes people more beautiful. You wouldn’t think so, but they look pale as statues, and the water just makes them…shimmer. They look ethereal.” She had to laugh. The words were too saccharine for anyone to actually say out loud. “Forgive me. I know it sounds preposterous, but you have to find something romantic about the rain or you’ll get bitter. I mean, it doesn’t all have to be completely awful. For instance…” 

        Taking each of his hands in hers, she rolled onto the tips of her toes to bring herself onto a plane more level with his. Her pale blue eyes searched his face, the black mess around them only increasing their intensity. Bowing her head to the side, her lips caressed his cheek. “How often do you get to kiss an angel?”
