It doesn’t take long for Kate to put the pieces together. She’s angry, of course, but if you want to be difficult then so will she.

When she approaches you with a thermometer you carefully keep a neutral expression on your face. There’s no point in arguing with her now that you’ve been found out and you don’t want to risk additional punishment.

You start to sit up, but she pushes you back into the pillows. You don’t realize what she’s planning on doing until she rolls you onto your stomach and straddles the back of your thighs.

Embarrassment almost makes you speak up, but you bury your face in the pillow beneath you instead. Kate lingers to let the humiliation soak in, clicking her tongue at the reading.

She rarely lets you get out of bed, both to soothe her nagging worry and stroke her own ego. And because nothing ever goes your way, your sickness gets worse.

She’s insistent on your temperature being taken multiple times a day. Sometimes she doesn’t even roll you all way over. You get grumpy enough on the fourth day that you grumble a bit and she starts to loudly undo the buckle of her belt. You don’t complain anymore after that.

“You know,” she says, fingers pressing your tongue down as she checks your throat. “I’m happy you’re being so well behaved. I haven’t been getting much sleep, keeping up with all the chores and all. Maria keeps giving me shit for being late.”

Heaviness settles in your chest. You know how much Kate worries about how she looks to other members of Shield and the team, especially a senior official like Maria. There’s a fair chance Fury’s heard about Kate’s tardiness and he’s not a man that tolerates inconsistency.

You try apologizing the best you can. It’s unintelligible and drool trickles past your bottom lip. “So messy.” Kate sighs with affection, wiping it away with a tissue.

She uses checking your lymph nodes as an excuse to sit in your lap, pretending not to see how your hands nervously fist the sheets. She knows how the unfamiliarity flusters you when she’s in your lap. Her fingers press gently under the corner of your jaw, behind your ear and down your neck.

She spoon feeds you soup and won’t let you hold your own glass when you drink.

Even though its obvious you’re too nauseous to bathe yourself, you still don’t enjoy when Kate opts to give you bed baths instead. It feels dehumanizing to have her rearrange your body to wipe you down like a piece of furniture, even if she takes great care in doing so.

When you slowly start getting better, she’s delighted at the proof of her caretaking skills, but there’s not really any harm in you staying in bed another day, is there?

I imagine Kate’s stressed from some huge threat the Avengers have been with in the city. She’s had a short temper for days and when you forget to do something mundane, she loses it. She tells you how easy you have it because of her and you’re trying to calm her down, but that makes her even angrier.

She slaps you hard enough your ears ring.

She looks almost as shocked as you; she starts sputtering apologies and drags you to the kitchen to get some ice. She keeps pressing kisses to your hair, still apologizing. You think she might be crying, but there’s an heavy feeling in your gut. This won’t be the last time, will it?

Kate may be eager to throw herself into danger learning what it means to be a Avenger, but she thinks it’s important to spend time with you where she’s fully present and not immediately passing out in her sweaty suit because she’s so exhausted.

She doesn’t travel often; she’s still inexperienced enough that she only deals with immediate threats to the city if it can be helped. During lulls in criminal buffoonery, it almost feels like the two of you are a normal couple.

Some mornings, she just insists on staying in bed as long as possible and the two of you have lazy sex, fall back asleep then actually get up because you’re both hungry.

She’ll help you water the plants and take care of the animals while you tell how how each of them have been doing. Kate’s personal favorite is the ringneck snake she’s named after Tony.

It’s an unspoken rule that when Kate’s dealing with superhero things that you cook, but Kate prefers to do it when she has extended time off. She’s gotten very good at making what she deems the perfect pancake via youtube and of course, drowns it in maple syrup.

Kate loves to watch notoriously terrible shows so she can make fun of them the whole time. She also loves playing Wii tennis in particular.

Kate’s a very physically affectionate person. When you’re on the couch together she likes to slide a hand under your clothes to rest her hand on your hip. She’ll come up behind you in the kitchen, spin you around for a kiss, then spin you back.

Once she trusts you enough, she lets you in the lab with her to make arrows on occasion (you really just label and hand her things the whole time). Sometimes you end up watching her do truly ridiculous things like shrinking her explosive arrows and seeing if what kind of containers they can explode when they detonate from the inside. You’re pretty sure shrinking things like an Iron Man suit or one of Bucky’s arms and keeping them in a display case at the apartment is illegal in some sense, but who really cares?

You usually just wear clothes like a tshirt or sweats around the apartment, but Kate’s always buying you things like silk pajamas and fluffy robes to wear. Of course, her favorite is when you’re wearing her clothes. It never fails to get her a little hot under the collar.

omg what if one evening, something intense happens and when they get home, Kate asks for the bracelet and reader starts crying, not wanting to take it off

Maybe something like an attempted robbery happens wherever it was you and Kate happened to be that night. Kate goes to stop it and you lose her in the crowd of panicking people. You haven't been without her in so long, losing sight of her feels like being dropped in an ice bath.

You try to fight against the crowd, but you get swept further and further back. You know the bracelet has most certainly already sent Kate an alert about your increased heart rate, but you keep pressing your thumb to the underside to send her a manual signal as you hide behind the nearest vehicle.

It takes what feels like hours; everything's too loud, everyone's moving too fast, you need Kate. You huddle against the side of the car.

The sea of people slowly turns back into a milling crowd as everyone calms. People start calling out for each other, checking on their friends. You stay hidden, pressing the bracelet again.

Not half a minute later there's an excited commotion and Kate comes leaping over the hood of the car. She waves people off, telling them to be respectful of her doing her job and they leave you two be.

You knock her back with a desperate lunge, burying your face in her shirt with a heaving sob. Kate scoops you up, whispering words of comfort into your hair.

When you get home, Kate kneels to take your shoes off, then takes your hand to lead you to the bathroom. You sit on the counter while she runs a warm bath.

She starts undoing the front of your shirt, kissing your skin with each button. She lays it to the side.

"You did good today, I'm so proud of you." Noticing the bracelet, she touches your wrist. "Do you want to take it off?"

A knot rises in your throat.

"Hey, hey. No, baby, don't cry." Kate wraps her arms around you. "It's okay, you can leave it on. We're safe, we're back home. Nothing can hurt you here."

Stillwater Kate, just popping off over the slightest perceived slights is just simultaneously terrifying and hot as hell. Like imagine reader leaving a single spoon in the sink because she wanted a snack but the dishwasher was still running. So, after reader's yogurt they just leave it in the sink and eventually forget about it. Then Kate comes home, stressed out from work and just in the worst mood. So as Kate gets a glass of water, she sees the dirty utensil and looses her shit. Just pure rage. As reader not so long ago was regularly failing her daily chores to fuck with Kate. Next thing reader knows Kate has just fully slammed reader into a wall and is shouting.

"How fucking dare you fuck around with your chores. You should god-damn know better you absolute fucking slut." Kate is just screaming and regularly finding new ways to push reader even harder into the wall. Meanwhile, reader is just standing there, confused, knowing better than to try to get a word in when she's like this. Eventuality, Kate will work herself into such a lather that it comes out as a quick, hard slap. And as Kate stands over reader, she revels the sting in her hand and how red reader's cheek is. The tension isn't broken until Kate notices reader fully crying. Reader is trying to ask Kate why between sobbing and for just a moment, Kat feels the slightest amount of regret for the first time in her relationship with reader. That moment quickly ends as reader reaches out towards Kate for comfort and Kate remembers how much she loves making them cry.

Setting her off is especially terrifying when she first starts keeping you captive. Superhero work is taxing; there are days where she doesn't have the energy left to even pretend to be patient or understanding and she already has you where she wants you, so why try?

She's pretty much solid muscle from training since she was a child, she can overpower you on a whim and there's not much you can do to fight you. The best thing to do when she's up in your face is to just keep your mouth shut. Sometimes that enrages her even more, but what can you really do?

Moments of regret aren't uncommon for Kate; she does love you, after all. Better for you to suffer with her than at the hands of someone else.

is there ever a time where stillwater!kate slow things down and make love to reader? how often does it happen, if ever? is there a part of kate however small that realizes what she's doing is wrong and that she really and genuinely loves reader?

it's not uncommon i'd say, kate's a very emotional and sentimental person. she loves to celebrate pretty much anything, she gets particularly sappy around christmas and new year's. if kate comes back to you exhausted and all beaten up from being a hero it's much easier for you to coax her into being sweeter.

it gets more difficult for kate to care that what's she's doing is wrong. some of the heroes she works with openly do terrible things or have their vices from doing their line of work. kate's always wanted to be a hero, but she never thought about the things she would have see, how much turmoil and pain it all was. she does love you, she wouldn't have taken you in the first place if she didn't. and if she's doing all these good things to help the world, why can't she be selfish about this one thing and keep you to herself?
