”i'll be back in ten, alright?” you nod and your boyfriend kisses the top of your head before leaving your apartment and shooting you a smile on his way out the door. you'd completely forgotten about the fact that you were on the phone and they had to clear their throat to get your attention again. ”sorry– were you saying something?” you say with a sniffle at the end of your sentence. ”yeah but now i'm on something else.”
ted had gone out to get you more tissues and cough drops and more frozen pizzas because in the last week you'd come down with a cold and despite how much you told him he didn't have to go to the store, he did. he was just that boyfriend.
”right okay, what is it?” you ask, snuggling back down into the sofa, blanket pulled right up to your chin. ”okay your boyfriend ted, he looks like that one guy from uh,” they snapped their fingers a few times as if trying to order the memory back to mind. ”two-ish years ago, remember? at the lynx lounge-bar?” the air you exhaled came out almost as a laugh. ”first of all, how do you remember that?.. and second, you'd have to show me a picture 'cause i don't remember it.” they scoffed, before sliding out of the call to find it. ”give me like five minutes.” you used your hands to push yourself off the couch, ”while you're doing that, i'm gonna go make tea.”
”okay."
”aha! i fooouuund it! y/n!” you your phone up from the counter, shaking your head at your friend. ”yes? did you find it?” that question comes out a little more sarcastic than you intended but this was one of your close friends, it didn't really matter. ”yeah, i found more than one. they're sending right now.” your lips form into a little 'o', and you tap out of the facetime call to open your text messages.
to say you were surprised was an understatement. it was ted in the photos with you. one with your head buried into his shoulder while he struggles to hold you up. another at a booth with you sitting on his lap, surrounded by your at-the-time large group of friends and one or two of his. your jaw seemed to drop farther after each picture. the third was horribly shot, with you and ted laughing while trying to dance. then the fourth was actually a video, music blasted but still you could hear your own giggles into ted's arm and shoulder and neck as he jumped around to the song with you on his back. you guys were wasted wasted. ”oh my god.” you let out a breath you didn't even know you were holding in. ”that is him. at least, it looks like him. uh,” glancing up at the time, ted should be home any minute, you smile. ”how did you remember that, damn.” your question isn't rhetoric but it's still a statement and you tap back into the call to see your friend, muted, laughing their ass off. ”unmute yourself you whore.” again, they burst into a fit of laughter but this time you can hear all of it. ”i'm hanging up.” you say and they put a hand up in defense, ”wait–” wheezing. ”WAIT BITCH,” a cough and attempt to catch a breath. ”does he know?” you smile, sniffling, trying to bite back the laughs that want so badly to escape. ”he will when he gets home, and when he does i'm hanging up on you–” your eyes flick up to the turning of the door handle and you wave at your phone. ”bye bitch.” the last thing you hear is a cut-off gasp before you end the call.
”hey teddy,” you coo, tossing your phone onto the other end of the couch, pulling the blankets snug around your middle. ”hi sweetheart. you alright?” it never failed to amaze you how often ted would ask if you were alright. ”yeah, just got off the phone with f/n.” you smile as he marches over to you, leaning down for a quick kiss before continuing on to set the bag of goods on the table. ”oh, anything interesting?” he wasn't even looking at you, he was moving items from the table to the cabinets but he was still invested in what was happening despite having only been gone for ten minutes. ”yeah actually,” you start to trail off, thinking about the right words to say. unfortunately, nothing comes of your short contemplation so you just blurt it out. ”do you remember being at the lynx lounge-bar approximately two years ago?..” your voice dies out at how specific the question sounds as you say it. ted's head turns to you and his face is scrunched up in confusion. he sets the last item down on the counter and steps closer to the back of the couch, leaning over you. ”maybe. why?”
maybe you did sound a little crazy to him, because what reason would you have for bringing up something he barely remembered? ”just something f/n mentioned is all.” you didn't smile, although your voice gave away how excited you were. ”okay y/n what's going on? am i about to get sniped or ambushed?” despite his serious-ish tone, you knew he was joking. still, you rolled your eyes at him, and reached across the couch for your phone. ”i was there that night.” you voiced, opening the photos that f/n had sent you. ”and you're never gonna believe this teddy, we,” you looked back up from your phone at him and gestured between the two of you with your index finger, ”were there together.” you turn your phone to face him with a smile on your face.
”what? there's no way.” he got up close to the back of the couch to look at your phone screen. his eyes seemed to have been lost in the pixels. ”that is you, right?” you ask, pointing to the man in the picture who is most obviously your boyfriend. ”yeah, i just, wow. talk about fate.” he smiles, eyes still on the photo. ”almost like an invisible string, huh?” he asks, standing up and moving to stand behind you, hands on your shoulders. ”yeah, like an invisible string.” you mutter as he leans over, placing a small kiss atop your head. ”and y'know y/n, if the universe wanted us to be together so badly, we should make sure it's forever right?” he asks, and watches as you straighten your back and turn around where you're sat. ”oh?” you already knew what this was about, all your friends knew, your family knew, his audience knew how badly he wanted to marry you. ”just a heads up sweetheart.” he headed back for the kitchen to get you more medicine to take.
