Supernatural. Season 1, Episode 3. Dead in the Water
An unfinished piece as I was feeling to stuck to finish it. I loved the shot of the boy reaching into the water but wanted to incorporate Dean as this episode had such a focus on him

Phoebe: I'm going through my mail and I open up their monthly, y'know, "STATEMENT."
Ross: Easy. Easy.

Look at that dork, so giddily proud to have impressed her with his fighting skills!
But it only takes a couple of moments for his mood to change. His “three” resonates loud and clear as he realizes that he’s actually made absolutely no progress in convincing her.
That’s when he decides to go back. Not because he’d planned to, but because zero has taken herself out of the equation. The radical shackles him once more. He needs to go back and attend to his duties.
(This also calls back to Sin-jae’s “what is 2 to 3” comment, meaning: nothing. Zero again.)
The “zero is my fave number” speech takes a whole new meaning when applied to Jo Yeong’s name’s pun!
But more seriously, the king is saying a radicant can only be freed from his radical in two cases: having a square root and coming across a zero.
He’s the radicant, shackled by pain, past, duty and responsibilities. Tae-eul is, of course, the zero; he says so himself. It’s not because she makes all that disappear like magic—poof!—but because she sees him as a person first and foremost, not as a rich powerful king or a means to an end. She doesn’t care about all that, so those shackles simply become immaterial, irrelevant. The manpasikjeok is the square root, which (when complete) allows him to leave that behind for a bit and come back to it later.
Which is why when she’s not around, he’s dragged back to all that. Without the zero, the radical applies again. The shackles come back. And there’s nothing he can do about it. Without her, he’s powerless.
He realizes this. And he’s ok with it because it’s her. He realizes that it’s a case where the sum is actually larger than the total of its parts.
As far as declarations of love go, as a math geek, he couldn’t have been plainer—which only adds to his frustration when it goes waaaaaay over her head! 🤣
I love this scene. It’s so clever.
