Week 9 - independent study
Narrative planning/writing with TK
Called in my friend Tk from Huia publishers to help me figure out my narrative for my spatial - discovered I need a lot of blurbs and narratives for my other outputs! Tk has been such a huge help for me during this project as both a friend and a mentor, cannot thank him enough for his help whether it be feed back or making sure i get fed, giving me a pep talk, helping to facilitate my thinking and being a bounce board for ideas etc.
Some pics of our workings:
General ideas/briefs about what is needed from each/what the purpose of each output is.
Bigger... + tone of voice, skeletal structures + what the kea character embodies
planning the advent calendar narrative.
planning the spatial narrative

Figuring out what I need to get printed, where, the specs and quantity. I want to start to gather some quotes and prep myself for prices - there’s massive potential that I can probably do some of these myself on nice stock at uni.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Considering all sorts of boxes, I want one that perhaps doesnt feel like you’re ripping the face off a kea - in that case is the box a kea? could it be an egg? a nest? What could it be instead? What is the purpose of the box and what might it comes to represent?
1. Impact Storage Box Foolscap Kraft

Price is ideal but doesnt open the way I want it to.
2. Sliding box:

Might be hard for kids to open and where do I even get these from?
3. Document box with lid

This is pretty groovy, might take some pimping out.
4. Papier Mache Rectangle Box Natural

Possibly too elongated? Considering the size and shape out most of my outputs.
5. Papier Mache Round Hat Box Natural

Perfectly round for an egg shape - trying to think about how my outputs my fit and sit in this shape box too.
A rather amusing but brainstorming chat with Tk - talking through my thinking around the box and what it comes to be and mean:

^ From the Kea conservation website
What do Kea eggs and nests look like? If I’m going to turn this box into an egg or a nest it needs to still belong to the kea and the narrative > it needs to be accurate.

Illustration updates - kea
^ EVOLUTION. Working on Donald’s advice and mixing that nice fluffy style with some Disney eyes and features.
de-fluffed the fluff too much so trying to find that balance - also rounding out the edges and fixing my shading - he looks much friendlier now!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I went to chat with Ati to get him to double check over the narratives Tk and I had written for cultural appropriation, as well as check over the idea of Waka Huia surrounding the box.
He loved the narratives - only thing he changed was takahē to pukeko as that was more commonly seen around rivers.
Further feedback/ideas:
kohanga reo >> nest >> safety > comes and goes
Waka huia > treasure box > with lid
papaho > treasure box > no lid
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kea refinements - rest of kea
changing the features and fluffiness on the rest of the kea i had illustrated. These are looking SO MUCH better! I’m so much happier with these guys, they look friendly, adventurous and a little cheeky but ready to protect
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Decided to go with the box from Whitcoulls - I’m going to pimp out the inside as a nest (maybe by lining it with a vinyl sticker or paper or something) and allow the kids to decorate the outside of their own box - just as they’re allowed to name their own kea.
By keeping the outside of the box subtle - it doesn’t scream at visitors at home or peers at school like “HEY MY PARENT IS IN PRISON AND THIS BOX IS HELPING ME GET THROUGH”
Hopefully there will be a little bit of magic opening up a plain box to some really fun resources and also in being able to decorate the box how you want it to be - really making it into a world that the kids can create and imagine, it’s their world and their friend, they can make it how they want it, the kea project will just be there to help them along their way.

Aaron’s another graduate friend of mine who I met at the How Might We Do Good meet ups whcih began back in February.
I caught up with Aaron after I had an interview at PwC for their experience centre - Aaron works in that team and put my CV forward! I had sent him my journey map a wee while ago as he asked if I was needing any feedback on my work at the last HMWDG event, so we chatted about this amongst all the PwC interview debriefing.
Feedback on Journey Map:
- add the human in, how does it impact their life further down the line in terms of development? how does it impact a community and as such a society?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I haven’t touched these since our supercrit as I wanted to really nail my illustration style first.
brown in new illustration style ^ with a bit of a whoopsie that I need to fix up on that second one.
Thinking about how these might look and work in context - I’m thinking that even though brown is true to Kea colours, these may easily blend in with the start greys and browns and blacks of a prison environment, especially outside if it’s wet and raining. I really need something that stands out loud and proud, visible in bad weather conditions and brings about a pop of curiosity and mystery - especially if they’re the first thing you see.
Changing up the colours to yellow! These will definitely mitigate my previous tensions about these tracks. Need to fix that bit in the middle again!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I’ve been tracing photos for all my other illustrations so realise that it’ll probably be more accurate if I keep doing this. I wanted about 5 different feathers so this image was ideal! Have managed to play around with different colour variations of feathers too.
