Okay, so I’m low-key freaking out over Magnus’s line about his power in the scene with Catarina. Because I think I see what’s coming down the pike, and if I’m right, it’s could be really not good.
Putting this under a cut for spoilers from the rest of 3a and the stuff we know so far about 3b
I’ve been thinking for months now that something about the timing of Magnus’s trip to Edom is weird. Because it would be easy to assume the half-season would end on a cliffhanger with him there, but we know from behind-the-scenes stuff that Magnus was filming in the Institute in 3x11, and 3x12 is supposed to be an intensely Malec-centric episode. Magnus is back in New York by early 3b, so the storyline a lot of us assumed would take place--everyone going to Edom to rescue Magnus--just isn’t going to happen.
But I think I know what is, and isweartagod I’m in tears literally just contemplating it.
I think Magnus is going to offer to give us his immortality to save Jace. He’s going to go to Edom and make that deal with Asmodeus (apparently Asmodeus gets a power-up when his warlock children sacrifice themselves to him or something like that, I can’t remember why Asmodeus wanted that in the books, except to make everyone suffer.)
EDIT: Having slept on this idea for a while and discussed it with people this morning, I am going to say that I now predict Magnus will actually give up his magic (I’m fairly firm on that one, because there is foreshadowing for it ALL OVER THE DAMN PLACE) and I THINK his immortality will go with it. I can’t point to any reason why, but I’m pretty sure his magic and immortality are linked.
Anyway...
But unlike the books (where Magnus’s centuries of living would have caught up with him instantly and he would have died on the spot when he gave up his immortality) Magnus is going to return to New York pretty quickly. No one is going to need to rescue him. And all he’s going to say is that he asked his father for help and received it. He’s going to avoid answering any questions about what price he had to pay for it.
But suddenly he’s totally okay with Alec moving in. Awesome. Let’s do it.
Which brings me to a lot of the vague hints from Todd and others we’ve been getting about things like Prague in Spring and Madzie being in the episode where they’re in Prague in Spring and whatnot. About all these awesome Malec episodes (3x12, 3x16 and I think 3x18 or 3x19?)
Prague is apparently a pretty popular wedding destination, and a lot of the hints and hashtags from the producers have led people to speculate that a Malec wedding would happen in season 3b, though I can’t remember where all I saw the speculation.
What if 3b is Magnus going full-steam ahead on his relationship with Alec because he’s got a countdown timer hanging over his head? Maybe he bargained for a single mortal lifetime with Alec. Maybe he’s only got a few months, before Asmodeus calls in his I.O.U.
So basically, 3b is going to be this idyllic Malec dream-come-true happy ending. Until Asmodeus shows up to cash that check Magnus wrote him. And we’re going to cry for fucking ever because we’re going to have All The Joy, followed by All The Pain.
(of course, they’ll find some way around it or to get Magnus out of his bargain, but still....it’s gonna hurt.)
