I think the worst bit of the broken!Cas storyline was that when it was Samhaving hallucinations and falling apart it was massively central in the plot and then as soon as this huge burden had been taken on by Cas it suddenly didn’t matter?? Like, Cas felt so bad for doing that to Sam that he willingly took on that horror show.
And how did the brother’s repay him? They left him in a hospital, alone and vulnerable and with a demon whose motives were openly self-serving. And Cas has been around millenia, can you even imagine the things he’s endured? The reprogramming - because I highly doubt season 8 was the first time they tried to wipe angels clean let’s face it - and the battles and the family strife that make the Winchester’s look like the cereal box family. Cas had endless amount of things that could have crushed him at that point. And they let him deal with it alone.
I really wished they’d done more with it, because I was so intrigued by it. Cas, who was made to think big picture, suddenly became transfixed with the smallest things. Bees, board games, make up, animals. I would have loved to see more of Cas when he was broken. But I also wanted him looked after through it and not made the butt of jokes.
Because at the end of the day break downs aren’t funny and they aren’t cute. Why was Sam’s break down written as painful and terrifying and vivid and Castiel’s was stupid jokes and innocence? It was wrong. On the surface, quite sweet and quirky, but at the end of the day it was wrong. Sam almost shot Dean when he was having his melt down, can you imagine the things an angel of the lord out of his mind with fear could do? Blowing lights would barely be the tip of the iceberg.
You’re just gonna have to imagine it though because broken!Cas was written as a precious little sunflower there to serve sandwiches.
