We can’t go back to China. So I thought I’d bring China to us.

I’m not exactly disappointed about the blatant lack of Emmett in the latest episode of Switched at Birth as I’m enjoying the discourse about cultural appropriation and racism and I am curious about where they’re going to take this story line next (and I hope they’re going to include more of Iris and above all, explore what she said to Daphne at the end of the episode), but I am surprised by it. Isn’t it weird that he wasn’t there at all? They’ve dropped this huge failing out of college / mental issues / drug abuse / attempted suicide bomb on us and that’s it? My guess is there’re going to be further complications for sure but I wish they’d steer clear of discussing Bemmett at least for another couple of episodes and just focus on dealing with Emmett’s mental health issues. I want to see him in therapy. I want to see him talking to Melody, to Daphne, to Travis. I want them to show us how he’s adapting to his new situation. And eventually, I want to see his confrontation with Bay, too. But if they’re going to revisit their past as a couple, I also need the show creators to remember that they’re not the same teenagers they were at the beginning. So much had changed – we don’t need these two characters falling into the same patterns they’ve had for the last four seasons.

So I figured this episode would be a cringefest and sure enough, it was. It was like watching a heated first-world tumblr conversation go out of control, but in real life. That’s how annoying it was. The only thing I liked about it was Bay’s story line, Bay x Travis, and I did appreciate Iris’ little speech in the end and I can give them kudos on realistic thoughts and lines. Like I do get what this show is trying to do, but it still felt a little reaching to me.
