Free, meaning like... do as you will, I'm not gonna chase you about unfollowing me, I'm not gonna fret if you block me because I post content you don't like. Live and let live basically! I thought it was normal until it started requiring a definition, but here ya go!
I'm thinking of rewatching ATLA. I haven't seen any of TLOK. I'm thinking of watching it after I finish ATLA. 1-10 how badly should I watch it ?
Have some wordswordswordsing from me first:
First off, full disclosure, I avoided watching ATLA when it first came out and didn't start until just before/after the series finale. I was a bitter weeaboo who thought it was ripoff anime. Lucky for me thebiggestnerd beat some sense into me and knocked my weeaboo ass out, got me into not only western animation but western comics too. Oh, and importantly for you guys, she also got me into Homestuck.
As it turned out, I LOVED ATLA and still hold it up as a great example of awesome animation and storytelling. So yes. Now.
TRU FACTS, TLOK as a series is a bit messed up. The whole second season I just sort of want to burn off the face of the earth, and it's clear there were budgetary problems and other issues that muddled the writing. There were simply too many cooks in the kitchen at some points. (Are we doing a political fantasy thriller? Are we doing a Twilight-esque love triangle? WE JUST DON'T KNOW.) There were a lot of red-herring plotlines (General Iroh???) and things that really should've been explored (You're -our- Avatar too!, etc)
All in all, expect it to be quite different from ATLA. If you want grand, sweeping fantasy worldbuilding and fun antics with kids, maybe give Korra a miss, especially if you're particularly attached to the world of ATLA. Korra was rooted a bit more in the real world, with historical allusions everywhere. If ATLA had some steampunk elements, TLOK is really more dieselpunk, with lots of robotics at play, and less Spirituality. (Which is funny, considering this story actually explores the spirit world more. )There's also this sort of... uncomfortable, really sad awareness about Aang being gone, and how people talk about him. Actually, most of the Gaang. It's realistic, and well-written, but at the same time it's hard to parse young, optimistic Aang with the Aang we see in Korra. It's a bit jarring, and if you're really attached to the ATLA characters, it can be kind of sad. (There's a few delightful moments too where they talk about shit Aang did that's just like GODDAMMIT, AANG. Or Sokka. I really missed Sokka this series.) It's also very... contained? We don't go to the Fire Nation at all that I remember? There's one little escapade into the desert, but for the most part it's in urban environments, which are interesting in its own regard.
ALL THAT SAID, TLOK is a hell of a fun ride, and I know marathoning it, you won't have time to stop and examine the "buh?" episodes so thoroughly and agonize over them.
The characters have a lovely growth to watch (Not just Korra, either! S1 Mako to S4 Finale Mako are literally two different people.) And fun and endearing. (Bolin isn't Sokka, but he's pretty damn cute and lovable all the same). Each of the characters- especially the villains too! Are fun to watch and get to know. No one is flawless, and their arguments and fights are really empathetically written to understand both ends.
And, of course, the action scenes are second to none. I'd even put them above the ones in ATLA. Bending has been perfected and refined and tweaked with for longer now, and styles have mixed. (See: Bolin and Mako using their bending like boxers.) I can't count the number of times I watched something happen and went "OHHH MY GODDDD THAT'S SO -COOL-." Whoever planned the battle scenes must've had a ball.
So, in a 1-10, I'd solidly put it at a 7.5. I really, really enjoyed the series, but there were definitely pitfalls, and I was fortunate that I did't have as much of an attachment to the original series to be disappointed.
things that are unfair: feferi and tavros never interact :(
Oh I know! :C
Although part of me really digs them being kismesis. Like ... She assumes she knows what's best for him, and coddling is a thing and he's like, no, really, i got it, can u not, and she continues to press and press and delicious awful passive-aggression ensues.
Good Feferi post, though isn't "bitch" a bit harsh? She's a thirteen year old girl, I kind of feel like brat would suffice without having to use such a loaded word, especially since you probably have a lot of young female followers who also mean well but find themselves falling short. I assume you have a lot of followers anyway since everything you reblog seems to rocket up in notes. :)
That's absolutely true. She's thirteen, she doesn't really deserve that word. I'll change it.
Why do you like feferi so much?not trying to be rude or anything i just love to hear people's reason for loving who they love ^u^
Okay!
I love Feferi for lots of reasons. But I’ll divide them into good and bad reasons. Well, that sounds weird. But more like… The traits I find about her that are interesting?
She’s Bright- and I don’t mean colors- I mean she’s actually very astute. She picks up on other people’s feelings, and also plans for her empire to come.
She’s Kind- she genuinely feels kindness toward other people, which is kinda a rare trait in trolls and sometimes it’s nice to see it.
She’s Funny- Aside from her puns, which are adorable and funny, she sets up jokes, and is genuinely playful.
She’s Brave- Kanaya said in canon that no one had the burdens she did, but she took them on because she knew everyone had a job to do. And, when she knew it was safe, she broke off a toxic relationship with Eridan. That takes a lot of guts.
She’s fucking creepy- She’s a Horrorterror Princess. She’s literally Cthulu’s baby girl. She looks in the face of these undulating, enormous monsters and goes, “mama!” She goes and kisses dead, bloodsoaked bodies and shows up in people’s dreams just to fuck with them. What the hell, Feferi.
She takes no shit- From anyone. From Eridan, from Sollux, even with Vriska she turns it on her head and outbitches Queen Bitch.
She’s pretty! - I mean let’s be honest here.
She’s blunt - Fef doesn’t really mince words. She’ll say how she feels exactly how she feels them and, well, there you go.
She’s also really weird-looking - Okay, she’s got these goofy goggles and this weird skirt and sharp teeth and big silly earfins, she has the potential to be the prettiest princess in all the lands or the weirdest looking goober ever.
She’s a privileged brat- Let’s get real. Feferi is a really excellent example of privilege in motion. She’s literally the next in line to run the whole empire. She captures cute animals “for their own good” and supports coddling castes beneath her, thinking she’s doing the right thing. This is the kind of girl who absolutely means well but manages to give backhanded concern and ignorant compliments. We can see what Feferi did as an Empress. For me it’s important to see a character like this and recognize those same flaws in myself to keep them in check.
She has/had potential- this is primarily Homestuck, but since Feferi isn’t as developed, it’s fascinating to see what direction her character could’ve gone, and maybe still could go. She could grow out of her condescension and mature. (having a goldblood boyfriend would do that), become a benevolent Empress. She could become corrupted, a deliriously happy, violent Empress. She could step down from leadership altogether, choose a quiet life with animals. We don’t know! It’s interesting to explore her, and I think that’s why I like her.
How DARE you like characters you like! Didn't you know MY opinion is the only one allowed?!?!
Hey hey, come on. It's kinda a legit question. There's liking fictional villains and feeling sympathetic toward them. (Loki comes to mind.) And there's kinda not a big step between that and, say, looking at the attractive Boston Bomber and going "BABY" (which, btw, happened, and is gross and what-the-hell-is-wrong-with-those-people-holy-shit.) It's kinda a good thing to get checked every now and then.
I guess. I just am really, really suspicious of anyone who likes Vriska at this point given how many shitty vriska apologists I've met.
Oh, Vriska is definitely fucked up, so is Eridan, so is Feferi, so are all the kids to some degree. But if you're really uncomfortable with Vriska and liking her, it might be better if you take me off of your dashboard, since I do reblog a lot of cute Vriska comics- just two yesterday! And I did write a huge fanfic that was very Vriska-positive, even if it was an AU. It's absolutely right for you to be suspicious and choose what you want to see, and I don't want to make you uncomfortable, but I do enjoy Vriska as a character, so she'll probably show up a lot on the blog in a positive, cute light.
This goes for everyone! Maybe someone followed me because... well, I dunno, they saw a costume of mine I made and they liked, but didn't really know what the content of the blog would be, or know me very well. Which is how Tumblr works! But just so everyone knows, I do like quite a few of the villains in HS- Eridan and Vriska to be particular. Do I think these characters are actually flawless and righteous in their actions? Hell no. Will I use words like "queen" and "tiny prince" and "my child" and "little muffin baby" so on, yes, probably. They're affectionate words for interesting characters, not condoning what they do. BUT, I absolutely get that this makes people uncomfortable, so here's a heads up, and feel free to unfollow, I won't be offended. I'd much rather you guys have a happy dash experience.
