Sad Jam Spotlight: Hang Me, Oh Hang Me
Welcome to our first Sad Jam Spotlight, and we’re diving right in the deep end.
I believe that this number truly epitomizes the spirit of Sad Spice by being equal parts ridiculous and heartbreaking. You might recognize it from Inside Llewyn Davis, which is a movie about a folk singer in the 1960s to whom every possible tragic thing that could happen to a white man in the 1960s happens. You may also recognize it from being the song that Brandon played at your friends’ open mic night in college, when you were nervous about performing and worried about meeting new people, and then he somehow made you cry and every other worry melted away. Or is that just me?
Anyway. This song has a beautiful, haunting melody, and a simpler-than-simple structure. In my opinion, when songs like this work, they really work. They stick with you, in your guts somewhere, for a long, long time, and when you need them, they’re there. This is the kind of song that, in the right mood, you could listen to over and over again, sinking deep into the repeated chords and hollow-full melody.
Enjoy, and stay sad, friends. -crust

Live videos from the Bear Creek show last night should be up soon:)
I tried to record Ms. Marling at tonight's show. I was going to post it on tumblr, but of course, either my phone failed me or I still can't properly use a smartphone. Here is a song Laura performed beautifully. It tugs at my heartstrings in all kinds of ways.
