I am feeling better.
Part 1
Alex snapped up at the tapping on his window, a rapid drum against the safety glass. Soft enough not to get his parents' attention, even if she wasn't asleep with the door closed on the other side of the house. Soft enough that he thought it might be nothing. Acorns falling from the tree outside. Debris in the wind. A little bit of ran.
Then the cooing started. It was supposed to sound like a dove, but if that was the case, it was an anthropomorphic dove, that was awake late at night and therefore had rabies or bird flu or something. He set down his pencil and hurried to the window before its dying song could continue and actually wake up his mom. He yanked up the mini blinds and cringed at the rip of noise, which drowned out even the hum of the TV on his desk.
Lana grinned at him through the window, perched on the grainy slope of his roof. Her crazy mess of hair was tucked into the collar of her jacket. She tapped at the glass again with a fingernail, but he swatted at her from the other side and took hold of the bottom pane. He braced himself, not because the window was particularly hard to open, but because opening it would turn the light on the alarm system from green to red, and if his parents were still awake and looking at it, they'd notice.
The window opened like a frumpy exhale, and Lana tumbled into his room, popping up onto her feet as he shut the window as quickly as possible.
From years of experience with “his freaking out” she knew to keep her voice low. She whispered everything in an over-exaggerated way, like she was breathing on a mirror to fog it up. “Hi.”
“What are you doing here?”
“You need to put on pants and come with me to Dairy Queen.”
“Why?”
“Because you can't go out in pajama pants.”
