STUDIO - I DONT KNOW WHAT WEEK?!’qnqn
i guess it’s studio clean out week… next week is install week, and the week after that assessments and opening night!
it doesn’t really feel real thag it’s ending soon.
Anyways. i cleaned out my studio
rip john 2023-2025
this week / last week has been 2 test installs, finalizing my plinths and moving them into storage.
For the second test installs that was done yesterday, on the 18th of november - we tested out all 11 tvs, trying to get them to sync at once and display all videos. using a 16 port network switch and just one power port (with an amp)
some notes
it was a grueling test but at the end we were able to get all tvs and lupas to work in sync. the problem we found is that the window videos are messed up, even after re exporting along with everything else, when connected via ethernet to all the other lupas it will just not play. either remaining on the lupa screen, or when all videos flash to black to re sync, itll cause all screens ro stay black. Will try to re export and test them on friday.
Even though “proper” install date is 26th-28th, i’ve been told i’m able to start this friday, rhe 21st. hopefully giving me plenty of time to work out any test problems.
Other than that, I’ll need to attach split batons onto the window frame. I’ve got them already, just gotta drill holes? in them… i think. won’t be hard if I have the right attachment and a hand drill. tim won’t be back in the studios till friday, though I guess I can do it then too.
Catalogue form is due rhis friday!
WEEK 13 - Studio
Long time no update but in truth i haven't rlly done much... I've pretty much finished the videos so I have nothing to do until install, which is going to be hell!!!! 11 videos, synced on per object (so; 1xchair 4xwindow and 6xbed)
Which means 11 lupas, 11 screens and 3 network switches. I think
Im doing a test install next monday to test the syncing. I confirmed that I have the 11 monitors loaned, (thank u Jenny VR) they are in the sound studio right now. I'll export the 4 window videos (and maybe more?)
The next big thing is getting the bed plinths from Liam. I have emailed him and I'll be able to get them after the deinstall of the Fauvette show, some time next week. I think ill try to work something out where I can claim the 302 room to store the plinth in. Because we are clearing out the studios and I don't think it'll fit in the store room. It would be nice if I could just keep everything in the room i'll be installing it in anyways.
WEEK 10 - STUDIO edit changes
changed resolution to fit when it will be eventually split into 6 monitors got rid of webcam footage transition between footage and 3d model
Some updates on the edit after talking to yvette
suggested to try either a more abrupt cutting style rather than the long fade, or to alter the footage so that when it transitions into 3d render, there is no figure, making it cleaner
also adding a white screen at the end, after the text. simplifying the visual information even more, text isn't even needed.
also changed the aspect ratio for the bed as eventually itll be split in to 6 monitors that are 3x2.
also talk of painting the plinths and maybe walls a very light grey - like the 3d model. away from the context of the white cube? more of a digital aesthetic?
digital aesthetic not as in glitch and simulation and game but as a blank word document, untextered starting cube in blender, a pixel.
WEEK 10 - STUDIO
Allocations did not come out! however I have come to terms, I don't think i NEED 302. It doesn't get much foot traffic and honestly i'd be happy with any space that's sort of isolated. A corner and 2 - 3 walls, some space to walk around.
Confirmed that I will be getting 11 of the soniq screens, measuring 795 x 115 x 491mm. I am now able to draw up a confirmed diagram for the window frame and begin construction.
I'll be using 16mm mdf boards, (tim will be) cutting 100mm strips and stacking 2 ontop of eachother, so the height is 32mm. Then we will miter the corners, and i'll construct the frame by glueing them together. It doesn't bear any weight so glue is enough. It'll attach to the wall using split batton (the thing i keep referring to as slant mounts). Tim will cut the boards today and I'll come in and construct them next week.
Talked to Liam as well, and I'll be able to use two of the low plinths in the fauvette show for the bed plinth, so that's all set. Also, liam will contact blake and dmu to try and get 11 lupas. Very happy that i'll be able to sync the videos.
I'm very happy with my progress! I don't think i'll be cramming a lot at the end.
WEEK 10 - STUDIO
hellooooo blake said sync would be cool
imma finish editing master versions of each video by this week! the end of.
so we can test syncing and focus on install stuff sooner
bc of sync, all video shave to be same length. rough guide for each transition stage as i want the room to transition together smoothly.
basically done with the window master edit now.
after this week if I have all the edits, all that is left is to split window and bed video into its respective monitors, test sync and build plinths.
feedback / allocations from the form will be released this friday, which wil lmk how many screens and the sapce i have yeyayyaya
MIDSEM - studio
Hellooooo some updates... Focusing on the video stuff, trying to get as much of those done as I can so when I get feedback from the form and know what actual monitors I can get, I can start planning on the installation part.
Created 4 low resolution version of each piece of footage. Also cut down to just the bed, chair and window for now.
Trying to be restrained and minimal in the compression / distortion. I don't want to go to far and have it read too glitchy or imply its a machine or program. I wanted some of the artefacts you can find on low res youtube videos. For the last low res version, I ended up recording my phone screen with my laptop webcam to get that blurry, low resolution look.
Working on all the text videos. (the final destination.) was going to do some cutting out and black screen or blue screen, but that feels gimmicky, and again I don't want it to read like... computer program-y. Debating on if the text should just say the name of the object, or the file name for the video of the object. Because I want to emphasise the minimal nature of the representation / visual needed to make meaning / identify these objects... ughhh idk. on one hand, with the file name, it retains that one degree of seperation. less abstract. This is still a VIDEO of the object. while with just the name its kind of less categorical or manmade and more astral projection of obect name.
yeah, something like that. also decisions to fade the text in very very slowly, with just a simple dissolve or something, nothing jarring or too distorted.
also update: for the bed, itll still be 6 screens but changing the orientation so the dimensions are actually more bed like. They will be verticle now, three on top and 3 on bottom.
yeah! i think im on track, at least until I have to deal with making plinths and stuff. also need to figure out actually editing them together... Should I edit them one screen at a time, or one object at a time and then splitting them into the seperate screens by cropping? the latter would be easier, but less dissonance between the screens. well, it won't be synced anyways, but. uhghhhh
WEEK 7: STUDIO making plinths and shit!
hello pauL!
made the "chair" plinth, big thank you to tim who helped me cut and assemble the plinth with 16mm MDF and glueing and nailing it together. I then sanded and painted it.
I also tested lowering the resolution incrementally through exports for some of the videos!
a little frightened by the fact its week 6... i gotta get freakin going! my plan is to finish recording the raw footage for all the videos next week, test edit a few of them and do a test install with the plinth. Contact liam or discuss install with someone to figure out the dimensions of monitors available and what i'll use, then I can continue constructing the rest of the plinths. Yippee!
