La Bouquet - Sad People Dancing
Of all of the bands I’ve been supporting over the past few years, I may be most excited to see what’s next for La Bouquet. Numerous setbacks including label buyouts and Facebook hacking have made the release of their debut record a little more difficult than expected, but still, they’re pushing on. The release of their latest single “Sad People Dancing” last week also brought with it the official release date of their record of the same name and a ceaseless buzz within the LA music scene.
La Bouquet is a seamless mesh of about a dozen influences ranging from punk rock downstrokes to 80s synthwave and 2000s indie pop. The use of so many familiar elements in their music causes an immediate nostalgia to present itself within their discography- letting you view your own life and musical past through your favorite ViewFinder. Just as the title suggests, “Sad People Dancing” creates a melancholy mania in your headphones and an irresistible flow in your feet to carry you away into the rainy summer evening that is this track.
Where some artists with similar influences fall through the cracks, I feel as though La Bouquet truly excels and creates a space of their own. I was lucky enough to watch them perform for the first time last week and was immediately awestruck. All of their songs take an elevated and more lively form onstage, showcasing the true artistry of the music they have created. While listening to their music, but even more so while you watch them perform, you are suspended in time and surrounded by the mist of fervent energy emanating from the band. La Bouquet as a whole for me is an experience, not just a band.
