Poppy’s manicured fingers gripped the steering wheel. Ah, sweet freedom. It had been a while since the vampiress had driven, and she nearly forgot how much she loved it. The day was gorgeous, too, the perfect Saturday for a drive. Sun poured through the open windows.
She and Saenis Lightwood were cruising in a red Datsun Cherry that had definitely seen better days. But hey, Poppy thought, wind tousling her blonde mane. that’s what you get for doing business with a skeezy Car Rental. Neither girl were legally able to rent a car, so Poppy had to find a short-cut... That short-cut happened to be a wonky-eyed man named Big Al whose magazine ad boasted the tag YOU GOT MONEY AND A LICENSE -- I’LL RENT YOU A CAR. Not a catchy phrase by any stretch, but Big Al was true to his word.
The Datsun was speeding down the highway with the radio blaring. Poppy glanced over at Saenis through her Ray Bans. It was the Irish girl who’d suggested they take this day-trip. It came as a surprise to Poppy, as she hardly knew the girl outside of their shared history class but she jumped at the idea of getting off campus.
“We’re about an hour out... should be there in, like, no time.” Poppy said, gaze returning to the road. “Hey, why don’t you put a cassette in? I think I saw some in the center console...”
