The European Parliament has given the green light to the first list of “safe countries of origin” whose citizens will no longer be able to seek asylum in the EU. The list includes Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Kosovo, India, Morocco and Tunisia as well as EU candidate countries such as the Western Balkans nations, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. The Netherlands scrapped its own list of safe countries last September, following a series of rulings by the European Court of Justice that placed limits on which regions were eligible. Under the EU rules, member states will be able to examine asylum applications from safe countries with an accelerated procedure which can be carried out at the border or in transit zones. It will be up to the asylum seeker to prove that there is a real threat of persecution or serious harm if they return. EU member states will also be able to designate other countries as safe, a measure that will only apply at national level.

The EU wants to speed up processing asylum applications by creating a list of "safe countries of origin." Tunisia is on the list — despite a politically-motivated mass trial of the political opposition just last week. Over the weekend, Chaima Issa, a Tunisian writer and human rights activist, was sentenced to 18 years in prison. The daughter of a former political prisoner, Issa has been imprisoned in Tunisia since 2023 and is accused of "conspiracy against state security." She was not alone. Her sentencing came as part of a mass trial of prominent opposition figures in Tunisia last Friday, including politicians, diplomats, lawyers and civil society activists. All had spoken out against Tunisian President Kais Saied and were sentenced to between 13 and 66 years in prison. Some, like Issa, are in jail in Tunisia, while others have fled the country. "The Tunisian government has been using arbitrary detention and politically motivated prosecutions to intimidate, punish, and silence critics," the international advocacy group  Human Rights Watch explained. "The verdict is a travesty of justice and illustrates the authorities' complete disregard for Tunisia's international human rights obligations and the rule of law," the global human rights organization Amnesty International added.

Ooh, that's a toughie! Keep deporting migrants to an authoritarian country where they are surely going to be imprisoned, possibly tortured and/or murdered, (For Sub Saharan Africans, it'd likely mean imprisonment then expulsion into the desert where they are likely to die) or stick to the principles and international laws we hold others to. Gee, I wonder which will win out!
