Well... I tried to be respectful about this, give it some good thought since Iwakura is very smart... but... there’s... just no way he can take out Benjiro. If Benjiro were a stupider character, more in Shinobu’s line of thinking, sure, I can see it, but Benjiro is as smart as he is powerful. He almost got away with murder, after all. Benjiro would murder Iwakura probably the same sort of way and reason as he did Hozumi. Iwakura is smart and taking him out of the game is, therefore, a smart move. He wouldn’t use his power because he wouldn’t want to draw attention to himself. Iwakura, again like Hozumi, may have a bit of respect from Benjiro so he would use a similar ‘I would kill someone I dislike’ defense. He would use water or an attack to the back of the head... some form of death anyone could accomplish.

30: What makes your OC defensive quickest?

Probably the implication he doesn’t care about people or that his dozing off is highly rude. Nanase works himself silly for others and having that be seen as nothing is bound to get him a bit defensive, because it’s a personal insult to him. He hears a lot of bad and inflammatory opinions that he disagrees with, sure, but he still tries to talk those out and have some respect.

24: How would your OC react if they got humiliated by someone in a group of people?

Nagisa’s quite the eccentric. I don’t think he really feels conventional embarrassment. And if they were intentionally trying to humiliate I think Nagisa would just own it. Or well, he’d probably just shrug it off and try and make a joke out of it anyway but yeah. He’s just like that.

1: What’s your OC’s biggest insecurity and how would they react if someone pointed it out to them?

Well the easy part is badly. Benjiro isn’t really the type to just take shit from people. Chances are if someone points it out he’ll either strongly suggest they stop or just outright deck them. You don’t like that? Good. Neither does he. It’s that simple to him. As for what he’s insecure about, that’s trickier. Maybe that he’s still a child or that he’s not strong enough. He desperately wants to grow up and help his mother and he secretly worries it’s not happening quickly enough.

14: If your OC gets into a fight with their best friend, would they wait for their friend to make up with them, or would they try to make up with their friend?

Kuremi is 100% the type of person who approaches the friend with a solution first. She lives a fast-paced lifestyle and, as such, doesn’t really enjoy prolonged drama. Besides, if she has a problem, it’s better to try and solve it. She’s never been the sort of person who waits around for a solution. And if it’s a friend, chances are she wants to be back on better terms anyway.

The Survivor: Nanase. Well this is ironic considering the canon. But yeah he strikes me as a good protag, he can run real fast, that’s for damn sure.

The Culprit: Matthias. Don’t know how real this is but it feels right with this selection.

The First Victim: Kuremi. Honestly Kure’s pretty tough but the other roles fit so well and between her and Benj… yeah, she won’t last as long. Besides, most horror films start with a girl’s death so I guess it’s fitting.

The One Who Almost Made It: Benjiro. christ look at him, he’s going to put up a fight and then some. But he’d end up overwhelmed in the end probably

The Comic Relief: Shinobu I mean it can’t NOT be Shinobu. Space ickies, et cetera

The Genre Savvy: Hibiki. He’s so down with the tropes he’s just going “HAHAHA, killer’s sooo gonna jump out now” and when they do he just screams the most high-pitched scream. Genre savvy, yes, intelligent, still not quite there.

1. Benjiro and Akai

1: Origins! How did you come up with the concept for your OC?

For Benjiro, I can’t quite remember... I do think I was influenced somewhat by the movie Happy Gilmore but it was just the base concept of “someone who got talented at their talent via doing it as a means to calm down” sort of thing. So originally they were going to dislike their talent because it wasn’t their passion... but the more I developed, the more he ended up enjoying calligraphy as well as many other old person-esque hobbies. I had to figure out why he got into calligraphy and his other hobbies so I constructed the backstory knowing he would be shaped by his grandparents.

He was never going to be a happy character, that’s for sure. But when I compared him to Shinobu I knew I wanted a more sober and serious character so it helped to make him more serious and angry rather than comically over the top.

1: Origins! How did you come up with the concept for your OC?

Akai was originally part of a duo with Chase. I had the idea of a Host and a Matchmaker who did not get along as the Matchmaker saw the Host as someone who stole clients and broke a great many hearts. It was a good duo, but it ended up falling through. I still wanted to use Akai however so I moulded her into her own character. Originally she was designed to be somewhat creepy in nature; I wanted a very tall girl who wore an over the top cutesy mask that ended up scaring most people to just. Have a knack for pairing them up. When I drew Akai with the mask however, I couldn’t get it looking right and I found the look of her with pink eyeshadow to be really appealing. It’d be a waste if you never saw it so I had to scrap the mask part. (Though I still have the concept of it, laughs)

Since the creepy aspect was out, I had to find out new ways to make her interesting which is when I developed her speaking way of speaking with the overuse of tildes and ooey-gooey adjectives like sweetie and honey came in. I also played up her violent nature a bit though this was always a part of her backstory. I suppose that’s that.

What kind of a joke was this...?

First of all, there was the obvious height difference. Then there was the body mass difference. And honestly, in Benjiro’s eyes, there was also just the difference in determination. And the ability to finish a job. He stares down at the knife pointed down at him as if trying to assess its intent but that is clear enough to anyone, he figures. If this is Cornelius’s idea of a joke, it’s a poor one. And one he’ll pay dearly for.

“You know I figured you were smarter than this. I am not the person you want to gamble with, kid.”

His tone is dangerous, more so than usual, and his glare chilling. He doesn’t intend to let Cornelius just get away with it even if it is just some dumb joke. No, there’s going to be payback for this.

Either he gets stabbed here by Cornelius or he strikes first. Hell, even if Cornelius does strike him he has no intention of sitting down and letting it happen. Of dying here in this strange horrible place. With his teeth gritted and eyebrows furrowed, the calligrapher lunges not for Cornelius’s knife but for the guy himself, a hand going straight to his throat. When it came to power he was sure only a few people could match him. Aiichiro, Kozue, those two were dangerous. But this guy he could take. He could even kill if he wanted to. Benjiro attempts to turn the odds against Cornelius and shove him away. Rage is burning through his blood but will it be his undoing? Will he go too far and actually end this kid? It’s a possibility. He’s going to murder someone here at some point anyway. Why not this guy?

“This was a real bad fuckin’ idea, you know that?” he growls.

I imagine Benjiro would save his grandmother though. Because although he probably respects and may even like his grandfather more he knows he’s led a long fulfilling life and that if his wife didn’t make it... well, that he wouldn’t be the same guy. If Benj saved his grandfather over his grandmother, his gramps probably would never forgive him either. I think both of these guys share “wanting her happiness” in common, in fact.

7. Do you you believe your parents know best? If not, then who?

“Eh… Mio’s smart but I don’t think she knows best or nothin’. I mostly just act on my own head, my own thinking. Doesn’t lead me to bad places, I find. Gramps has some good ideas too but… I’m not even sure he knows best. Old bastard.”

13. Do you believe people who force you out of your comfort zone are helpful? Annoying? Do you want to deal with them at all?

“If I wanted their help wouldn’t I damn well ask for it? People pokin’ their nose into my business without permission is always infuriating. It’s even worse if they somehow think they’re doing it for my benefit. Fuck off, you hardly even know me you nosy shit.”

20. Do you wish people paid you more attention?

“Fuck no. I want the opposite. I’d be a lot goddamn happier if people left me the hell alone for good. Honestly this need for companionship everyone seems to have… it’s a drag and I don’t want a part of it.”

28. It’s a dog-eat-dog world and everyone’s got an agenda. Do you believe that?

“… Sure, why not? If the shoe fits. Even a nice guy’s got their own thing goin’ on in their head, right? So they have an agenda. And yeah, maybe he’ll trample on others to achieve results. Can’t say that’s evil, that’s just people for you. You expect it.”

32. Would you be happy being thought of as a subordinate to someone?

“A subordinate, you say… naturally I should be happy about such a promotion but hmm, I’m unsure. If I fully trusted whoever’s in charge I suppose I’d gladly be a subordinate but I have so many ideas… I can’t help thinking I might make a very good leader indeed! Of course, I think it would be best settle democratically. I like to hear the opinions of the people before reaching a decision of my own making.”

39. Do lies bother you even if they’re for a good cause?

"Hmm, dishonesty, is it! A most interesting choice of subject! Yes, indeed, subjectively lies are what we would call a bad thing however this is where the Lady of Light’s opinion admittedly changes from what might be expected of her a little! For you see, I do believe there are good lies, said for the benefit of everyone. Not everyone can handle the truth, I have seen it. And sometimes the truth makes people worry – worry about something they cannot, nay, could not possibly change. Pebbles do not affect the avalanche, as it were! I would rather tend to it in my own way, yes, lie, if it benefits and maybe if things clear up… then the truth could be revealed properly. Perhaps not. It depends on how kind the Lady Justice feels…”

“Fantastic! Glorious even! Is it not the best to connect with someone who you share nothing in common with?! It’s amazing! Truly! This just proves how amazing people are in general!”
