Despite what some Arizonans might tell you, #Saguaros CANNOT survive a wildfire & they have not adapted or evolved to withstand fire like some old growth pondforests have. If the Saguaro survives the initial blaze, tissue damage and stress from the blaze severely weakens the plant and shortens the otherwise long life the plant would have enjoyed. The cause of these wildfires are nonnative invasive species of plants introduced to the #SanoranDesert like Buffelgrass which is difficult to eradicate and is taking over. This is a trunk of an old #Sagauro that survived a fire in the #SuperstitionMountains but is succumbing to disease and rot. It's heart breaking and it was difficult for me to document...
