Blood trickled down Sage’s jaw from a deep gash across his tan cheek. He avoided your eyes, knowing what he’d find there—worry and sympathy. His two least favorite things. He knew coming back to your room banged up from the bar wasn’t the best plan, but to be fair the fight wasn’t his fault this time.
Some guy had gotten mouthy with the bartender, and Sage had simply—stepped in. How the hell was he meant to know the guy was carrying a knife? But the pity in your eyes hurt more then any cut could. It was still a foreign concept, you caring about him. And he’d gotten better in recent days about accepting the love you had to offer, but it was still hard sometimes. Especially when he got hurt. God, he hated making you upset.
You pursed your lips, sighing before setting aside your book, crossing the room to grab the small basin of water you kept on the table near the door. Your hands busied themselves with soaking a small rag, the silence in the room causing Sage to squirm around like he wasn’t twice your size.
“‘M sorry.” His voice sounded gruffer then he’d meant, the words falling off near the end. He looked to his shoes, worrying his lip between his teeth.
You hummed in response, wanting to gather your thoughts completely before replying. You moved closer to him, your steps confident where they had once been hesitant. He threw himself in your desk chair, looking up at you dutifully. You gave him a small smile, pressing the rag to the cut, gently wiping the blood from his skin.
He winced in pain, eyes closing. Your tongue poked out from the corner of your mouth. Once the cut was clean (well, clean enough), you pulled the rag away, dropping it on the desk and grabbing a small bandage.
Once he was all doctored up, Sage let his eyes open again, searching your face for the disappointment that people normally looked at him with. But there was no traces of that; how could you be disappointed in a man you loved so much?
“It’s okay, love,” you reached up to scratch that special spot between his ears that he loved. He melted into the touch, a low purr emitting from the back of his throat.
You laughed quietly, moving back over to your bed. You pulled the covers back, snuggling yourself underneath half of them, your head nodding to the other half. Sage smiled, quickly stripping himself of his jacket, left in nothing but his boxers.
He hurried to curl up besides you, head burrowed into the space between your neck and shoulders. You pressed a kiss to the top of his head, fingers moving slowly through the top of his hair, stopping occasionally to run a thumb along his ear.
“I just want you to be safe.” You didn’t speak until you were sure he was nearly asleep, not wanting to deal with a heavy conversation at the moment. He nodded, eyes remaining closed, body wrapped around you like some sort of portable heater.
“I know. I’m trying, I promise.” That was good enough for you, at least for now. You nodded, listening to his breaths finally even out.
