🏔️✨ Introducing Baishiya Monastery (Ganja Baishiya Temple)
Nestled in Ganja Township, Xiahe County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, Baishiya Monastery stands against towering white limestone cliffs, surrounded by vast grasslands, deep gorges, and striking Danxia landforms. Believed to be the earthly manifestation of the Vajra Palace of Chakrasamvara, it is a sacred hidden gem within the "Ganja Secret Realm."
Founded in 1644 (Shunzhi era), Baishiya began as a Sutrayana college and later transformed into a Tantric institute under the guidance of Ganja Pandita. In the late 17th century, the 2nd Jamyang Shepa officially incorporated it into the Gelug lineage, making it a subsidiary of Labrang Monastery. After severe damage during the 1950s and Cultural Revolution, it reopened in 1981 and has since been gradually restored.
Baishiya is home to one of Tibet's three great female reincarnations: the lineage of Gönrik Drölma, known as the "Dakini Mother." This unique female tulku lineage began in the 17th century and continues today with the 6th reincarnation, who actively serves both religious and social roles.
🏯 Architecture & Treasures
The monastery features the Pillar Buddha Hall, Golden Roof Hall, a grand Maitreya statue housing a miniature Shakyamuni Buddha, and an intricately carved Cakrasaṃvara Mandala. It also preserves rare scriptures written in gold ink and sacred statues bestowed by historical Jamyang Shepas.
🌿 Natural & Cultural Landscapes
The striking white limestone cliffs stretch over 15 km like a natural fortress. In summer, lush meadows bloom spectacularly; in winter, the scene becomes stark and majestic. A long circumambulation corridor with prayer wheels surrounds the monastery, filled with devotees and incense smoke.
🌟 Female Tulku Lineage (Gönrik Drölma)
The Gönrik Drölma lineage, unique to Baishiya Monastery, blends Gelug teachings with Nyingma and Jonang influences, emphasizing female spiritual authority. The recognition process combines traditional signs, visions in sacred lakes, and instructions from high lamas. Unlike other lineages, it also recognizes "achievement-based" incarnations, as in the case of the 2nd Gönrik Drölma, celebrated for her extraordinary spiritual attainments.
Today, the 6th Gönrik Drölma leads religious practices and engages in regional governance, embodying both spiritual and secular leadership.
Baishiya Monastery is part of the "Ganja Secret Realm" scenic area (entry ~80 RMB; separate temple entry ~30 RMB). Visitors are encouraged to respect local customs, walk clockwise when circumambulating, and avoid photographing monks. Be mindful of the high-altitude conditions.
Baishiya Monastery is a profound blend of Tibetan Gelug tradition, female tulku lineage, and breathtaking natural landscapes. It stands as both a sacred pilgrimage destination and a living testament to the resilience and beauty of Tibetan culture.
