i just saw your post about stormy daniels, and i really appreciate it- so thorough, yet so easily digestible. i also listen to a lot of politics, but wasn’t quite as well informed on this as you were- which shows do you recommend?
I’m happy you found it helpful!
I listen (probably unhealthily, lbr) to a bunch on my daily commute and getting ready, but here’s what comes to mind
General News
I don’t have cable but I listen to Anderson Cooper and Rachel Maddow’s previous nights news in the morning on podcast. It’s interesting sometimes what’s the same and different, tone, and emphasis. I also subscribe to the Washington Times, because dammit, they deserve my money. Though I did wait until they were having one of those steep discount deals, so.
The Political Landscape, current events
Slate’s Political Gabfest--kind of roundtable discussion of media and politics insiders dishing on the last days’ events and speculation--from slightly different positions. I don’t always or often agree with all of them but it’s a good way of seeing different ways people who are in the know are reading things.
Politico’s Nerdcast--Different people than above, but very similar format.
Stay Tuned With Preet Bharara--Interview show with opening questions and call ins. Very smart host who was a US District Attorney in the southern District of NY, which is in the news a lot lately. His podcast isn’t exclusively about politics but they come up a lot.
FiveThirthyEight Politics--Elections, gerrymandering, but mostly polling, predictions, and commentary about polls’ uses and abuses
Amicus--fabulous podcast dealing with the Supreme Court, and the law
Sometimes I listen to Pod Save America which is gleefully left-leaning, but somehow, itunes isn’t pushing my subscription anymore, I just noticed. I have some catching up to do.
Also, for these times, I know it was blasted and rec’d all over the podcast world when it came out, but the parallels are just stunning and it is so well put together, I strongly recommend Slow Burn. It’s short, covers the political environment and shenanigans around Watergate and worth it. It feels prescient and laden with de ja vu.
Podcasts about Trump, specifically
Can he do That? --This one seems to be on temporary hiatus I think for a maternity leave)
Trumpcast-- All things trump critique. I like the in-depth reporting on this, but, and this is a personal taste thing, am eh on the parodied tweets and short interlude sketches.
Trump, Inc. ProPublica podcast, usually in short episodes, but some longer, depending on the subject, looking at 45′s business dealings, financial entanglements, and corruption scandals. It’s constantly evolving and eclectic, and also solicits crowdsourced tips, which they investigate and publish if they’re merited-they broke the story about how the White House is illegally using the Presidential seal on Trump properties merch, for example, based on a listener tip.
And then I listen to a bunch of non politics podcasts like prudence and such but. yeah. Commutes.
