In 2008, the Palm Desert-based indie-rock super group Sailor on Shore released their only EP, which featured 5 excellent songs, including these songs, “Monsters” and “Against the Waves.” SOS was comprised of KC Bozanich, Bolin Jue, Carlee Hendrix, Joseph Martin, and additional musicians. Their sound was unlike anything the desert had experienced up to that point, channeling shoegaze, folk rock, and other experimental sounds. They had the privilege of harboring 6 singer-songwriters in the band, and this advantage shows itself prominently on “Against the Waves,” an interesting song where all six share the singing duties. Before SOS, the members were active in Something Vague, Jungles, Shrunken Wool Sweaters, and more; and afterwards, they were in Town Troubles, White Buffalo, You Me & Us, Dreamcatcher, and more. Sailor on Shore’s rapid rise and demise, for many desert music lovers, marked the peak of indie rock, and perhaps also signaled its conclusion. People should bug KC to get the band back together. Until then, SOS’s EP remains solid. For fans of Bob Dylan, Wilco, The Beatles.
