Montreal.
I had to put my money where my mouth is earlier this month and take a trip up to Montreal. I’ve been digging so many sounds coming from out there, I wanted to experience them for myself.
I checked out the Alaiz Invasion, hosted by Saine Scene, featuring some of MTL’s freshest DJs and producers. The party went from funk to Biggie album cuts during prime time that had the dance floor open, to some soulful house and finally to a live performance by Louie P of The Celestics (the other half of that group being a Sound Travels favorite, Kaytranada), followed by the ill turn up with the latest club bangers. I got there too late to check out Planet Giza, the group that inspired me to take the trip because I am loving their EP, but I heard they killed it.
The Biggie album cuts were played by the artist whose latest I am leaving here for your streaming (and downloading) pleasure. I got to check out Dr. Mad with Walla P that night at the Alaiz invasion and I got to check them switch their style up the following night as they put on their regular night, Voyage Funktastique, a night featuring disco, 80s soul, funk, and future funk. I chopped it up with an American ex-pat and talked about the city and how it’s changed over the last 10 years, the spot we were partying in (owned by a DJ. sound was great. vibes were amazing), and the music scene in general. Then I spent the rest of the night dancing, drinking bourbon, and completely forgetting there was a bit of a snowstorm outside and I had to walk quite a bit back to my hotel.
It was a great trip and I came back with some musical goodies I can’t wait to share, but why wait when you can listen for yourself? I name-checked quite a few folks and linked you to their work. Check it out. Discover more and if you can, head up to Montreal. I plan to be back soon.
