June 8, 793 was the beginning date of the Viking Age, marked by the raid on Lindisfarne, where monks had been illuminating precious manuscripts for about 200 years before the Vikings came.
Some of these manuscripts still survive, such as this initial page of the Gospel of Matthew. Note that some of the lines use Rune script capitals. I love that the last word on the page - “Abraham” - had to be divided over two lines to fit in!
