The first time your fingers graze his wedding band, Jack Abbot freezes. It can’t be chalked up as an accident. Your movements are too purposeful for that, careful as the pads of your fingertips glide across the cool metal.
It takes a moment for Jack to say something.
He clears his throat. “Everything alright?” he cautiously asks, treading carefully. With your head laid in the crook of his neck, Jack can’t see your face or make out your expression from this angle. He can’t tell what’s going on in that pretty little head of yours.
It’s not like it’s a secret that Jack’s a widower. He doesn’t really make any attempt to hide that fact nor would he want to. He’s not ashamed of his wife. He loved, still loves, her. At one point in time, she was his everything, and when she passed, a part of Jack died with her. Though the pain of her passing has faded as the years have gone on, he thinks he’ll always love her. He makes no apologies for that.
His arm around your shoulder tightens.
Still.
That doesn’t mean that Jack’s not a little concerned what may be going through your mind at this moment. Even though you knew that he was a widower before he first asked you out, you could be having second thoughts about getting involved with a man like him who has enough baggage to last multiple lifetimes.
“Mhm,” you mumble. You twist the metal band around Jack’s finger. Then you do it again. “I was just thinking about how nice it is to know that you were loved.”
That is not what Jack was expecting you to say.
When he doesn’t reply right away, you shift, putting some room between the two of you as you lift your head off of his shoulder and push yourself to sit up more. There’s a pinch between your brows.
“Was that weird to say?”
“No,” Jack instinctively says. He never wants you to doubt yourself around him, or even worse, because of him. “Just unexpected.”
He pulls you back into him, having enough of the distance you’ve created. You go easily enough, settling against Jack once more. He rubs his hand over the length of your arm, trying to get you to relax again. “Not weird at all.”
“You promise?” you murmur. Your fingers fidget with his wedding band.
He presses a kiss to the top of your head.
“Promise.”
“I was just thinking,” you start, feeling a need to explain yourself, “about how you’ve gone through a lot of shit in your life and it made me sad to think of you like that. But then I thought that it’s nice to know that you weren’t alone for all of it. That you had someone by your side who you loved and loved you in return.”
You go quiet for a moment before softly saying, “I bet your wife was wonderful.”
“She was,” Jack wistfully says. It’s been awhile since he’s talked about his wife. He never expected this kind of conversation happening tonight, but he can’t say he’s upset by it. “I think, no I know, she would have liked you.”
You tilt your head to look up at him, eyes wide. “Really?”
“Really,” he chuckles. “Honestly, she would probably think you’re too good for me.”
“Sounds like a woman who knows what she’s talking about,” you joke. You nestle back into Jack’s side, fully relaxed again, and press a soft kiss to the juncture of his neck and shoulder. He makes a pleased sound and squeezes you tight.
Jack’s not superstitious by any means. He doesn’t believe in fate or destiny or any of that bullshit. All he knows is that he’s lucky as hell to have found love twice in his life.
