Back in 1995, British author Nick Hornby made a modest splash with his best-selling novel High Fidelity about the music-obsessed owner of an independent record store. The Hollywood film, released in 2000 and based on the book, glamorized the quirky appeal of rock fandom and competing against the big chains. Two decades later, most of the big music retailers have folded, but many spunky indie record stores remain.
