“And who do we have here!” Petite girl greeted him with her childish voice.
By now it was not unusual for him to be greeted by short woman, as he did move in with Allen Walker and it so happens that one, Road Kamelot, liked to bother said boy. A lot. He once tried to ask why was she always inside their apartment.
At that time they were watching TV, one of those lucky evenings where there was completely no need to rush as everything was done already through the day. Link sat in his usual armchair while Allen and Road occupied sofa, while white haired boy sat properly while girl was hugging his arm closely supporting herself as she was leaning on him. This position seemed more of reserved to lovers rather than friends, with the intimate vibe it gave of. But Link knew better, Allen was not one to cheat so bluntly, he was dating Kanda after all.
Both of them answered in a heartbeat to him, and although their words were completely different he somehow got the feeling that they meant completely same thing. ‘I love him,’ is what she said. ‘She is family,’ were his words. It did held lot more meaning to both of them and Link decided not to delve on it, he knew Allen enough to understand meaning of family to him, but blond knew nothing concrete of Road at that time…
Now after months of her casually barging inside the apartment, even when Allen wasn’t there, he still barely knew of the girl. “Allen is staying over at Kanda’s tonight.” Link said in hopes that it would make Road leave, trying to walk past her into the kitchen that doors she stood in front of.
“I am well aware of that,” she said glancing away while stepping to side, successfully blocking Link from accessing the kitchen, “say, would you do me a favour.” Road looked up, small pout and big beaming eyes at taller male, a perfect innocent look that had practically everyone to do what she asked for, and Link wasn’t exception.
To blonds defence even Kanda Yuu has no resistance against it, apparently it was puppy dog look equal in power of one Alma Karma, and honestly it scared everyone to think what would happen if two would meet. Now of course that mattered little, as little wolf in sheep’s clothing was staring at him from under her eyelashes, and god did she look adorable. Link knew he made mistake by looking straight her in eyes that was a battle already over and young adult sighed and accepted his demise. “What is that you want now?”
Road practically beamed at semi positive response from blond. “Not much, just could you close your eyes and stand still for moment?” She clasped her hands in delight and perhaps little bit in mischief, it was after all Road.
“Why?”
“Just do it, please! And I will leave!” She promised, tilting her head a little, her side bangs falling on her face as if just to make her look even more charming.
“If I do it you will leave right away?” He questioned, girls presence was distracting, always so, and he had work he needed to focus on so if that was all it took he might as well.
“Of course! Have I ever lied?” Road giggled at her own words, in all honestly she have never lied, rather she didn’t say a word in place of foolish lie, or she was wonderful liar and no one had yet to catch her in act. Link liked to lean more on latter option.
“Not that I know of. “ Blond said as he closed his eyes. It was quite weird request and he didn’t knew what to expect, he herd lots of shuffling and jingle of keys, presumably her car keys. After more shuffling around him just standing idly he finally heard Road approach once again.
“Thank you!” She pated his cheek and ran out the door.
When Link turned to look back he just saw hem of Road’s summer dress and closing apartment doors behind him. With main obstacle gone Link finally stepped in to his kitchen.
Road could hear screaming in the distance.
Perhaps she should stay away from the apartment for little while…
Well, no she won’t. Giggling to herself she placed her palm on her lips once again, what Link didn’t knew won’t hurt him.
Summary: But that is what Nagisa’s life came to be, from quite average university student to still average university student just with a demon always trailing behind.
What a joy.
Notes: I seriously have no explanation, just that Karma is little shit and Nagisa should have reported him. Also I’m not super good at humor but I tried, also can be found at AO3 and ff.net , 1.6k+ words
Chapter 1: how everything started
Alarm clock rang loudly, waking up young man from his slumber. Pale slim hand reached out from under the covers to hit snooze button, he could afford sleeping in today as only classes he had were in afternoon. After the offending object was finally turned off, at least temporary, he rolled on his back with sole wish of going back to sleep.
Sadly the moment he felt weight pressing down on his chest, he knew that he won’t get any more sleep. Strangest thing about this situation was that normally it would be pets to wake up their owners in similar fashion, however in this case when boy tiredly opened his eyes image that greeted him wasn’t of his pet, simply because he didn’t own one, what he saw was a boy resting on top of him. He was grinning and staring down at other, his golden eyes shone bright with amusement.
Now before anything this was absolutely not the way it looked. Everything had completely reasonable explanation, or so he believed.
It all started when one, Nagisa Shiota, decided to help younger boy who looked utterly lost in big city, not to say his clothes were absolutely ridiculous, cosplay of some game character he guessed. For one Boy was indeed lost, but he also said that he was running away, perhaps that should have been code red alarm to get away for Nagisa but he was to freaking kind for his own good. He directed boy to train station but suggested him to talk it out with his family. Surely Nagisa himself didn’t have greatest family relationship but even he worked it out, more or less.
The boy smiled disturbingly sweetly and asked to walk him there, as he was, apparently, terrible with directions and would just get lost again. Nagisa at time wasn’t really at rush so he agreed to help out, in hindsight it should have been SECOND warning for Nagisa to run, RUN and never look back. But joke was on him because he went with boy whose name he didn’t even know yet.
There was no third warning, boy simply dragged him in empty alley and started to mumble things under his breath in different langue or just too fast for Nagisa to understand.
“… For I’m Akabane Karma.” Is how he finished before kissing Nagisa.
It was just too sudden for Nagisa to react properly as kiss was just simple press of lips and as fast as it started just as fast it had ended.
Boy just grinned showing of his sharp teeth. “From now on you belong to me Nagisa Shiota.” He proclaimed proudly as if he completed some great job.
Nagisa’s mood was ruined his face from surprise fell flat, before he smiled kindly startling Karma slightly. Kick in groin was truly unexpected for younger just as remark that followed. “Pervert.” That was when Nagisa fled the scene.
Normally similar stories would have ended just like that. Nagisa left boy in alley to never meet him again, really he had no energy to deal with disgusting people like that.
He continued with his day just like that, by time Nagisa went home he had actually even forgotten unpleasant occurrence.
But the OCCURANCE itself seemed to have not forgotten Nagisa.
When he came back home Nagisa fumbled with his keys little before unlocking door to his cheap apartment moving straight to kitchen to put down his groceries. Well that what he should have done but the moment he entered living room he froze dropping plastic bag with groceries right there on the floor. Brief though passed his mind that thankfully there were no eggs in his shopping list.
But that was not even main problem here now!
Young adult actually slapped his cheeks, hard.
It stung, a lot.
And yet he could not believe his eyes, in middle of room on couch sat same boy from the morning. Same pervert that kissed him in alley, sure he wore normal clothes now, but red hair and mischievous look on his face were dead giveaway.
“How the hell did you get in here?!” Nagisa could not help but shout at the trespasser.
“You left window open of course, didn’t I-” He just smiled tilting his head little in what suppose to be cute manner, but other had none of it.
“It’s a freaking 4th floor! And are these my clothes?” With few wide steps Nagisa closed in on teen towering on him. Truthfully the only reason he could lean over other like that because teen was sitting.
“Well if you would have listened to me back in morning I would have explained that-”
“I don’t want to listen as I don’t care get out before I called police!” He cut short Karmas rambling again. Really how dare he barge in his home like this after what he did! Just who did he think he was!
Karma’s smile fell. He breathed out tiredly and stood up gaining height over older boy, grabbing him by his collar to get their faces only inches apart. All cheerful air from him was changed with dark threatening aura.
“Now listen brat, I’m a demon you know, you should be honored that I chose you to connect me with middle realm.” He grinned again showing two rows of razor sharp pointy teeth. His voice was low and aggressive.
“Honored? How about you get the fuck out and honor someone else with your presence.” Nagisa hid his fear well under nonchalant look, letting himself out from others grip. Honestly only reason he got out because Karma himself released other, he looked almost excited really.
But Nagisa gave up he just gave up. After week that is. Because it was when he finally got his mind around that Karma really did not lie to him about being demon. If floating around all the time didn’t prove him already the very next day.
And now month later this is how they lived. Karma now, though, owned his own clothes because Nagisa’s were too small for him.
So really it wasn’t what one would think about this situation. Nagisa actually even started to think of demon as overgrown human’ish pet. And so he treated other like one.
He reached out for small spray bottle on his nightstand. “Karma-kun, get off.” He warned with sleepy voice.
But demon just put his head on Nagisa’s chest and closed his eyes to pretend that he is sleeping. Even if he already explained that demons do not need sleep at all. Karma was really like annoying pet that did whatever he wanted so Nagisa punished his misbehaving pet.
He sprayed demon with water from small bottle. Now, the water in bottle was no ordinary, it was holy water from local shrine, he even had small Rosario around the bottle so Karma wouldn’t snatch it away like he did with first 2 spray bottles.
Demon jumped off from the boy’s chest, he had that scandalized look on his face like he was betrayed, but he did that every morning. “I thought you wanted to sleep some more, Nagisa-kun.” He sounded truthfully confused, but Nagisa knew better by now, red head was teasing him.
“Heavy.” Was only response he gave to other before turning on his side and trying to sleep again.
“Nagisa-kun, if this is how you go when you won’t get to sleep anymore!” Demon said in sugary voice before grabbing one of Nagisa’s legs from undercover and dragging him out.
With small thud Nagisa hit the floor, it did hurt little bit, but he had worse. Simply sprawling of on carpet Nagisa stayed there for few minutes. Hoping that sleep would take him away even if it wasn’t really good place to sleep, but of course how could one ever sleep with demon hovering only inches above him. So Nagisa simply got up.
He didn’t get to sleep, much like every other day, because the little bastard that made it his task to ruin Nagisa’s life wouldn’t let him.
Aside from disrupting his slumber Karma also happened to have no regards to personal space. Like, at all. He was just like a cat when it came to affection. When he decided he wanted physical contact he will get it no matter what. Heck even in public.
He had no care in world mostly because others didn’t see him, except Nagisa so it would seem. Karma half heartedly explained it was because of contract, but when questioned further he ran away.
It was just month of them living together but somehow Nagisa had already grown accustomed to annoying presence of supernatural creature. Even now as he was making himself tea and couple sandwiches for breakfast other had his hands around Nagisa’s neck and even had nerve to keep his head on top of shorter boys’.
At least he was floating and didn’t weight down other.
“So, Nagisa-kun what are we doing today?” Karma moved away from other, when Nagisa sprayed holy water again, though other would feign that he simply got bored of it because older boy didn’t react properly.
That meant jumping little or getting flustered.
While it was true that he got used to in indoors, in public he still reacted to it the way Karma wanted, much to Nagisa’s dismay.
“You, stay home. I, will go to my classes, understood?” Nagisa knew it was futile, from the way Karma’s tall swung back and forth playfully and that grin, he knew, oh he knew other will follow him out. He always does, without doubt.
But that is what Nagisa’s life came to be, from quite average university student to still average university student just with a demon always trailing behind.
Summary: All Kise wanted was for Kuroko to return to him...
Notes: Based on cute manga I read, 2k+ words, also posted on AO3 and ff.net
Sweet aroma of freshly baked bread, buns with any possible filling you could imagine, from sliced pieces of deliciously ripe fruits to masterly made jams, filled narrow streets of small town. Just one inhale of it and anyone finds them self bewitched by it unconsciously trekking down their way to small local bakery.
It was old but well taken care of with mystic feeling of to it. Everyone would feel like they are at home, relaxed and happy lulled by wonderful scent of baked goods. No matter what gender or age everyone adored that place and its owner.
Tall blond could say just same about the owner of the bakery. Enchanted by fragrance that was so familiar to him he kept going for his destination.
This man was called Kise Ryouta, a well known model and owner of famous pastry shop. Kise had everything one would want to achieve concerning his looks. He was tall and muscular just enough to look deviously handsome. His golden eyes shone brightly in his catalog cover worth face. One would say that his golden ratio was almost impossibly perfect.
As a chief though, he wasn’t any good at all.
He was eating a crepe while walking down narrow old street looking for rumored bakery. The reason why someone like Kise Ryouta came to this desolated place was because of owner of said place. After all that man was sole reason why Kise opened a pastry shop.
They met in Tokyo during their middle school, Kise at that time was absolutely lost with what he wished to do, by then he was already scouted by model agency and he thought that it secured his future. After that everything became unbearably dull.
That is until he met a boy. Kuroko Tetsuya. They became friends unbelievably fast considering difference in their personalities. But only by end of middle school did Kuroko told Kise about his dream to become a chief.
Now that he thought about it more, his decision to create famous pastry shop was inspired by his infatuation with the boy.
And truth to that, they kept contact in high school and college, and when Kise finally opened small pastry Kuroko gladly accepted to work there. It was bit difficult at first, but Kuroko enjoyed himself working there and nothing made Kise happier than seeing his beloved smile.
He regretted never expressing his fondness to other correctly, never actually confessing his love.
One day Kuroko just gave him slip of paper of his reassignment. It was quite a shock at first even when boy explained that he needed to take over small bakery in his home town that he loved dearly. Kise didn’t want other to leave however he had no means of way to make other stay.
“Kurokocchi should have just stayed with me. Everything here is so rundown.” Kise whined to himself silently as he took bit of his crepe. Or at least he tried to do so only to find it gone from his hand.
Now, he might have been lost in thoughts for a bit but he was sure he did not finish eating his treat.
He absolutely did not eat paper packing that held his crepe.
There was no way.
As he heard rustling right behind him, Kise released a breath he was holding in relief. Right behind him black creature at size of cat was eating his sweet. Said creature raised its head to look at Kise.
It was certainly not a cat.
Or any normal animal at that.
Blond did not let out high pitched shriek. He didn’t scream at all. No he truly did not.
Well maybe little bit.
----
“Kurokocchi you have to believe me! I was attacked by some kind of monster on street!” Kise wailed to his friend, the main reason why he was here in first place.
“Don’t be ridiculous Kise-kun, there is no such thing as monsters.” Boy deadpanned, he was used to his friend’s weird antics.
“Kurokocchi but there is! And one of them ate my crepe!” Kuroko choose to ignore Kise continuing to work at counter. Few people who were in shop laughed little, they didn’t mean any harm but it was fairly amusing. “It was really scary you know, it had tail and wings and was really scary!”
“Oh, it must have been a fairy then.” Kuroko said monotonously, it was frequent matter after all.
“Well they do say that fairies lived in this town from ancient days.” One of customers said.
Kise couldn’t help but feel ridiculed. “But that was some grotesque being!” He couldn’t believe what he was hearing, clearly this was absurd. Old man just laughed again saying that they could take various shapes. How utterly bizarre was this situation Kise couldn’t even start to warp his mind around it.
“Kise-kun I’m really glad you visited, but please go home, I have work to do.” Kuroko dismissed his friend easily. It wasn’t lie of course. His bakery was well known and loved in this town, and it truly made him happy. He had feeling way Kise truly came to him, but there was nothing to change his mind.
When Kuroko exited his little shop to make a delivery for one of his neighbors Kise dutifully followed him.
“Wait! Kurokocchi, I came here to get you come back, to work for me!” Kise fastened his pace to catch up with his friend, while munching on slice of cheesecake he was given earlier. Kuroko’s baking skills were wonderful after all.
“Kise-kun no matter how many times you ask the answer shall always remain same.”
“Please, you have to think again…” Whatever blond wanted to say more was cut off by very manly scream that escaped his throat when one of fairies took slice of cheesecake from Kise. “Kurokocchi, did you see that monster!”
“That what fairies do, please don’t make ruckus Kise-kun.” Neither his voice nor his expression changed. For Kuroko after all it was everyday thing, something that one grows accustomed to.
----
It was really late in evening when Kuroko was still working on pastries. It looked like magic to Kise, the way other so skillfully applied icing to small cupcakes he backed just earlier carefully placing small piece of fruit on top.
It looked positively delicious.
“May I have one?” Blond asked reaching for one of the treats. His eyes sparkled with excitement he loved Kuroko’s cupcakes the most.
Kuroko however just swatted others hand away. “These aren’t for you Kise-kun.”
“Eh? Are they for somebody else?
“They are for very important customers.” Kuroko’s voice was soft and full of fondness, Kise rarely got to hear it like that, and never directed at him.
“At this hour?”
“Please watch carefully.” Boy took tray with freshly baked goods and placed it on table near one of the windows.
Soon clatter could be heard right from outside, it kept getting louder and louder till something opened window. Kise would have screamed if Kuroko did not shush him with small smile. He looked at opened window with fondness.
It was mystical. Fairies, he couldn’t count just how many of them there was, came in and took sweets one by one, leaving different types of berries on the tray. It was captivating. Kise might have just understood little bit why his beloved Kuroko decided to leave everything for this small shop. Maybe just a little bit.
“Are you feeling like going home yet?” Kuroko stared intently at his friend, as if looking for something.
“Absolutely not! I won’t give you that easy Kurokocchi!”
----
For couple days forward everything continuing just same. Kise kept going after Kuroko with same request over and over again. Fairies still kept bothering them, but he learned to accept that they there only for Kuroko’s baked goods.
Blond knew just how stubborn his friend was and yet he could not accept defeat, he simply could not leave without his Kuroko.
He wondered at times if he should just confess his affection to other, maybe then something would change, maybe then Kuroko would follow him back.
It was wishful thinking, he knew. He still had something to try before it. Probability of success was small however he had to try anything he could.
Kise was utterly exhausted, this town was taking too much from him. Those fairies were simply too much for him.
But this was the day he had to make a move, it was risky he was aware but there was tiny light of hope. Kuroko looked in high spirits that day working diligently on pastries.
“You look in good mood today Kuroko-kun!” One of local customers laughed. He lived here for long time already and knew almost everything about town and fairies.
“A very special customer is going to visit tonight.” Was simple answer but it was said with such sweet smile as if talking about ones lover. Something squeezed Kise’s heart hard when he heard one of customers ask whether it is his girlfriend.
“Good morning…”
“Good morning Kise-kun, here please eat and hurry home.” Kuroko said to his friend, sweet smile that played on his lips before changed into small line. His average expression.
Something twisted inside Kise, and it hurt it hurt so badly. “I won’t.” His voice was drained of all cheerfulness he usually possessed while speaking with Kuroko.
Clearly it was long shot but Kise was at his limits, with deep breath he reached in his bag and pulled out check book. He placed it on counter with bit too much power.
“Tell me how much?” He said releasing breath he was holding.
Kuroko just glanced from side to insulting object. After all he was working not for profits. He chose to ignore it and kept working on apple pie.
“I’m not the best out there Kise-kun, surely enough you could get anyone work for you, or even get them specially trained for you.” Ice cold voice. Just like that he was dismissed with voice colder than blizzard in South Pole.
Strangely enough rather than discouraging him it made something flare up in Kise. Wounded heart made his mind go blank with rage. Kuroko should just come back to him and everything would be alright. Just like it always was!
“It has to be you! No one is better than you!” He didn’t mean to scream. Kise regretted it all almost immediately. If not money, than what could bring Kuroko back to him. Love? Any faith he held in that option shattered like a glass.
“I’m sorry Kise-kun, but there is nothing that could change my mind.”
Rejection, it was clear rejection of anything Kise could offer to Kuroko.
Nothing but bitter after taste, was left in his mouth. He couldn’t say or do anything.
His defeat was clear, but defeat by whom?
----
Kise stayed in shop watching Kuroko work, they did not spoke much after.
He did not follow when Kuroko went out to make small delivery.
He did not try to persuade other again.
Small noises woke him up. Kise hadn’t even noticed when he fell asleep but it was already late in evening. He was still dazed when he saw one fairy. It was slightly different from usual ones he saw coming to Kuroko at evenings.
It was smaller, and less threatening in looks, except for glowing heterochromatic eyes, ruby red and amber.
Kise would have fallen asleep easily then if not Kuroko’s voice.
“Good evening Akashi-kun, I have been waiting.” His voice sounded so sweet and loving never had Kise heard him use such voice to someone.
Petite creature placed small branch on counter and nibbled on pie little till Kuroko approached it.
It squeaked in delight when Kuroko scratched its head a little.
And then unimaginable happened. Small fairy turned to human. He was slightly taller than Kuroko and looked otherworldly.
It took branch with berries and presented it to Kuroko, taking his other hand and kissing it.
Kuroko’s laugh was like ancient melody, so calming and captivating and yet implausibly rare occurrence to be heard.
Kise felt numb. He felt like crying and yet no tears fell down his face. This was a heartbreak, how truly unfortunate. He hated it and yet his beloved Kuroko seemed so happy.
Kises greatest regret was after all that he could never make Kuroko happy. He could never make other smile this easily and laugh melodiously like wind chimes do.
He was never the one who could give anything to other after all, as Kuroko already had everything he wanted.
----
Next morning then Kise came to visit he found Kuroko dreamily rolling one of tiny berries that fairy brought him last night. He didn’t want to disturb serene atmosphere other was in, he knew now that everything was pointless after all.
“I’m heading back to Tokyo now.” It was simple statement. There was no reason for him to stay there anymore.
“Do come visit at times, Kise-kun.”
“Of course I will Kurokocchi!”
Simple, simple everything was oh so simple.
There was no chance for him from the start.
He had no happy ending.
He dashed of when he knew that Kuroko won’t see him. It hurt, it hurt so badly. His chest seemed like it will explode. His vision became blurry.
Ah, he was crying.
Was it because of heartbreak?
He came here to make Kuroko happy.
And he was, so why?
Was it because his happiness wasn’t brought by Kise himself?
