Would a character like Salamandria be a single voxel model, or a couple combined through animation?
She’s broken up into 19 unique parts (some are mirrored or duplicated), and then attached together in animation so the joints can swivel and stuff.
Like this! Each of those white boxes is a smaller voxel model.
Here’s a render of Voxelnaut’s fire elemental, Salamandria! She was modeled in pieces in Qubicle Constructor and then put together in a custom program I wrote for making simple bone animations on voxels.
Part of the reason I like working with voxels is that it’s a lot more straightforward than modeling with polygons. The execution of adding or removing a voxel is simple, and you don’t have to deal with mapping textures to triangles. The barrier to entry is low! If you want to try it out yourself, there's a free voxel editor I’d recommend called MagicaVoxel.
Voxelnauts is a sandbox mmo currently in development; for more information, check out our Kickstarter!
