Today my Mom, two sons and I went to Salisbury Beach. In the mid 80's to early 90's I used to go to this beach a lot on the weekends (Friday or Saturday nights) with friends after work. I'd pick up my friends, head to 7-Eleven for Super Bug Gulps and snacks, then drive to the beach. I'd head to Salisbury to see the beach and boardwalk, but mainly go to the arcades with my friends. A lot of the arcades we used to go to sadly have been closed for years likely due to the home consoles being more popular. This particular arcade (behind me in the photo) called the Carefree Arcade was one of my favorites. They'd stay open very late, even in snowstorms. It was great. If I recall my friends and I played the first Mortal Kombat here when it was Grand new before it gained popularity. This arcade also had Splatterhouse before it made its way to the TurboGrafx-16 system, which to see it in an arcade was very rare. They even had hack versions of Street Fighter II such as the rainbow version.... very cool stuff. Luckily Joe's PlayLand is still open. You just need to go upstairs to see most of the retro arcade games. It's a bummer to see many of the arcades disappearing. I'm just glad my friends and I experienced the big explosion of arcades from the early 80's and into the 90's. To see a new game show up at an arcade was awesome and often drew a crowd, especially when a new fighting game would show up. These arcades at Salisbury Beach have been embedded in my mind as one of my happy places in life. Great friends, great games and no worries.
