“we must be in a rich neighborhood   —“   shelly jests.   she’s currently enjoying a cherry tootsie pop she received some blocks back.   thank goodness she’s wearing sensible shoes;   empress joséphine bonaparte can wear vans tonight.   she pulls the sweet out of her mouth, trying her hardest not to make a ‘popping’ noise, and twirls the stick between her index and thumb.   “i hope they have full size kit-kats   —   they’re my favorite.”   the sucker is put back in her mouth, and shelly turns to her friend.   “are you up for another block?”

in a mansion this old and in a city this haunted, there’s no way the witches at miss robichaux’s aren’t sharing these halls with souls not of this mortal realm.   so she and salome have shut themselves in an empty room   —   lights off, candles burning   —   in hopes of making contact.

apparently, whoever else is residing at the academy was happier without contact.   “wow.   we found a stubborn one,”   shelly mutters.   she’d say flat out rude, even, but she’s not going to insult whoever's on the other end of this conversation.   

“well, we’re going to stay, so   —   maybe you could tell us your name?   were you a witch studying here?”   no response.   after a minute without contact, shelly looks up at salome.   “i think we touched a sore spot.”
