What is Salsa?
In this famous video, Izzy Sanabria explains exactly how this multitude of influences became such a complete and legendary musical genre.
This is salsa: a mixture of sounds, cultures, genres - not for nothing it means "sauce"
In Cuba 1933, Ignacio Piñeiro was recording "Échale salsita" when, in the middle of the song, he yells "salsa!" to indicate the increase in rhythm and the mixing of sounds that is typical of this genre.
Izzy Sanabria was a graphic designer from Puerto Rico who moved to the Bronx in New York City during his childhood. Although he never played any instruments, he is considered very important for the popularization of salsa and is often credited with coining the term. He was also a master of ceremonies during many salsa concerts.
Salsa is black! @mintahtumbao They told us Salsa was just Latin… But that’s not the whole story.
Salsa carries the sound of survival— the rhythm of resistance— and the memory of a people who refused to forget.
It was never just about dance. It was about drums that crossed oceans. Rituals disguised as rhythm. And a beat that connects Congo Square to Havana to the Bronx.
Afro-Cubans and African Americans didn’t just share music— they shared memory. They fused grief and genius into something the world couldn’t ignore. And they called it Salsa.
💃🏾This reel breaks down the Black roots they tried to bury. The truth is: there is no Salsa without the African drum. There is no Salsa without Black brilliance. There is no Salsa without us.
✨This is an ongoing series, there’s not WAY I could cover every aspect of the history in these two minutes so please be patient as I share more of the story over time.
✨Drop a 🪘 if you’re reclaiming the rhythm of your ancestors. Say it with your chest: Salsa is Black.
