Salinas Grandes Salt Production
Of course, the main income from the salt flats is not from hotels but from salt production. We walked to the village's salt production area.
They cut large holes in the salt down to the underlying clay to produce salt for human consumption. Water is allowed to flow into the hole from the surrounding salt. Over several months continued evaporatration of water from the hole increases the salinity and pure salt crystals form.
These salt crystals are removed when the hole is filled with salt.
Salt is also harvested for industrial purposes. For this, a few centimeters of the top of the salt flat are scraped. Of course, this contains dust and other impurities and is not used for consumption.
Finally, they can break out large chunks of salt, and farmers use these as salt licks for their animals.
So the village gets income from the salt flat from harvesting salt for different uses, as well as from the hotel. All this provides an additional income strear for a village that otherwise relies on llama herding.
