Edgar let out a tired sigh over his glass of wine, still amazed he made it through the holiday season. Owning a bookstore seemed so quiet and peaceful. But he never took into account the gift rush. At least he hadn't run the store into the ground just yet. As someone took a seat next to him at the bar, Edgar offered a smile. "Happy New Year," he chimed.

Entering the shop, Christine let in a deep exhale. She had always loved the smell of oil and machinery. Spotting Billie she waved with a smile, moving to join the younger woman. "Anything interesting come in lately?"

Characters: Christine & Billie

They had agreed to meet up for coffee a week earlier, and as Christine hobbled into the cafe with crutches and her right ankle in a brace she began to regret not calling in sick. Her nose wrinkled as she saw the look Billie gave her from their usual table. "What can I do to get out of explaining what happened? All I'll say is I should've seen it coming."

Glancing up from his phone, Santiago waved as he saw Sophia enter the restaurant. Despite things not working out between them, he was glad they could still be friends. "Sup chicita? Hope you're not hungry. Guy said he'd come by to take my drink order like forever ago; still hasn't shown up. Pendejo."
