marshmerrow is not only a sweet treat, but also a well-known analgesic. workers (including slaves) often chew on stalks of marshmerrow to ease the strain of effort as they work, and a common childhood remedy for colds, growing pains, and simple scrapes and bruises is a simple bowl of saltrice porridge imbued with marshmerrow oil.

but what the parents administering this dish don't know is that it's not just a folk remedy, but actual alchemy. it's not far off from the typical healing potion a temple healer might give you for more severe ailments and injuries, albeit far less concentrated and potent. one of the first things novice alchemists in morrowind learn is the combination of common saltrice with analgesic marshmerrow to create a healing salve. but the knowledge is also an ancestral knowing passed down through the peasantry from as far back as the old velothi days, prior to the establishment of the great houses.

10 years that I've been pronouncing saltrice "sal-treese" like "Patrice." Didn't even pass through my brain that it could be SALT RICE

What exactly *is* saltrice? The wiki just lists it as an alchemy ingredient (and tbh, the picture doesn’t help much either, it looks like bark). If I were to make something ‘using saltrice’, what real-world ingredient would you reccommend as a substitute?

In my head I imagine saltrice to be something like a cross between quinoa and brown rice in texture, and slightly nutty and salty in flavour as it grows best along the coast. ~Tal

i don’t remember if eso portrays them this way, but i’m pretty sure morrowind doesn’t, sadly: saltrice and marshmerrow plantations should have paddies instead of normal fields. that would also explain why argonian slaves are preferred to work them - they’re better suited to the water.

though i wonder...were khajiit slaves also used in the same way? i imagine most khajiit (meaning the furred varieties, which is most of them) would be.....less suited for that kind of wet job. 

i think perhaps khajiit were used to tend to different crops, perhaps “groves” of corkbulb and hackle-lo shrubs, or in wickwheat farms. they may also have been preferred as house slaves, especially those with minimal feline characteristics, such as the ohmes or ohmes-raht. at least, when slaves of the men or mer races were not available, as i imagine they would have made optimal house slaves.

i imagine for the telvanni, slaves are used more for small tasks rather than large scale agriculture, though i imagine muck farms must have existed, especially given the pilgrimage story/quest at the fields of kummu (which to my knowledge doesn’t actually have any muck sponges! muck sponges only seem to be found in azura’s coast and west gash.) in that case, i bet argonians are the muck collectors whereas khajiit are like “tower” slaves than agricultural slaves.

when ku-vastei took it upon herself not only to start a rebellion, but to give her fellow slaves the means to rebel, she had to resort to strange methods.

often they could not find weapons, so they had to improvise with farming implements, “primitively” made spears (in the old styles of black marsh), and hedge magic loosely based on old traditions the hist had taught them long ago.

but not only did they need weapons, they needed the skill to use them. for this, she relied on the “marshmerrow” martial arts of the dunmers’ own dissident priests, which were based on legends of skilled ancestors defeating their enemies with nothing more than staves made of marshmerrow shoots. she taught those who wished to fight how to handle the stave and the spear, how to use it to maneuver around their enemy’s attacks, using their own power and momentum against them. the tradition also gave basic first aid knowledge, how to make salves of ground marshmerrow strips and saltrice to heal wounds in battle.

for tactics they relied again on the strategies of the black marsh, utilizing familiarity with the lands of southern morrowind to execute guerrilla warfare on their foes. but their fellow enslaved beastmen, the “hajhiit” as they called them, shared with them their own arts of stealth and subterfuge, as well as the “rain-of-sand” martial arts of their homeland elsweyr, which was in fact the root tradition behind the “marshmerrow” arts.

in truth, ku-vastei’s rebellion had the potential to grow and succeed substantially, had it not been for the slavers of house dres calling in assistance from the empire.

I tried out the Elder Scrolls cookbook recipe for saltrice porridge and it turned out surprisingly good. It was both sweet and salty and very filling.

Definitely felt like a dunmer farmer eating their breakfast before working the ashyam fields
