Libraries = Strong Communities
This week my plan was to write about a small, sweet community library that I visited last month in Saluda, North Carolina, a town my book club stayed in during our annual trip. What I did not realize is this is National Library Week and their theme this year is Libraries = Strong Communities. The American Library Association picked 2019′s theme to illustrate how today’s libraries are at the heart of our cities, towns, schools, campuses, providing critical resources, programs and expertise. They also provide a public space where all community members, regardless of age, culture or income level, can come together to connect and learn.
The Saluda branch of the Polk County Library System is a very inviting small, curated library that you can tell plays an integral part in this Western North Carolina community. Not only can one check out books and DVDs, but they also offer various story and craft times for elementary aged children all the way through middle school and high school and even one for the whole family. Or you could stop by for the midweek newly released movie matinee, the weekly Harry Potter movie marathon, chess club and if you are in the sixth to twelfth grades you might want to compete in the monthly Super Smash Brother Tournament on the Wii U. Additionally, you can reserve, for free, their community room that has the capacity of 50 for meetings and public events. This includes wifi, whiteboard, ceiling mounted projector, sound system and screen along with tables and chairs.
The plaque above is prominently displayed as you enter the Saluda library. It truly embodies the dedication and commitment the library gives to this town and surrounding community.
Interestly enough, I was reading a book this past weekend that goes right along with this week's topic. James and Deborah Fallows, coauthors of Our Towns: A 100,000 Mile Journey Into The Heart Of America, write in their book's introduction that public libraries are their favorite institution. Quoted from page 6 “Inside public libraries, we had learned from visiting them in nearly every town on our journey, you see the people, programs, problems, and answers that offer a genuine look into the heart and soul of a town.”
