MacGyver 2x6
i want to believe.
Mac: [about Cage] She’s the coolest agent ever!
Jack: [indignant glare]
Mac: Oh, I didn’t mean-
Jack: No, no. No. No, you said it. It’s out there. Now we have to live with it.
I love and respect Samantha Cage that is all
time to take a handful of pills and face the day.
Cage leaving
Mostly just wanted to get this up before the season finale for some reason, but I have some thoughts on the character of Cage and how she was written out, especially since I’ve heard rumors that she is probably not coming back.
First I want to make my position on the character known before we get into this. As a character, I actually liked her. I know a lot of people didn’t, but that seems to be both an immediate reaction to new characters (you see it in a lot of shows) and how they seemed to shove her in. The part I didn’t like, which seems to be what a lot of people took issue with, is how they pretty much immediately try to shove her in as a love interest for Mac. (Which wouldn’t be a problem, if they let it develop naturally, it’s seems like they were kinda trying to force it though.)
Onto the issue - I do kind of understand why they took her out of the picture, with the - at best - lukewarm fan reaction. My issue comes with the fact that the writers have left an unresolved story line regarding Cage.
In episode 2:04 (X-Ray + Penny), while the team are investigating the area Murdoc was holding Mac, Cage is in an open room when Murdoc calls her to introduce himself before shooting her. And it’s his comments that open the possible story line, particularly the line:
“But for now I just want to get to know you better. We have some much in common after all. We’re both interesting people, with interesting pasts. Neither of us are using our real names.”
Sure, Murdoc will lie just to screw with people, but I don’t think he is this time for a few reasons. First - A lie like that would be used to plant a seed of distrust in the team, especially against a newer member whose history is somewhat unknown. But no one else is around to hear, so that’s out. Second - Cage doesn’t really act even a little surprised, nor does she even remotely try to deny it.
“You seem to think you know a lot about me.” “It would be more accurate to say I know, I know a lot about you.”
And Murdoc definitely seems like the type to really ‘do his homework,’ especially when it comes to Mac and therefore the people around him.
It’s the fact that they wrote Cage out without answering any of the questions that episode raised regarding the character. If they had to write the character out, they could have easily done something regarding that story line that would not have left any loose threads. Such as having her as a long term plant by some other organization or country.
