No pressure on me against Raneem tomorrow,” says Amanda
[12] Amanda Sobhy (USA) 3-0 Samantha Cornett (CAN) 11-4, 11-5, 11-3 (24m)
Amanda I seem to have a little drop of adrenalin, when you have sat down at the end of the game, you come back, and you see the points running away from you. Well, it’s something I have been working on, before I used to find myself down 7/0, now, today, it was only 3/0. Which is an improvement. It’s not a physical matter, I’m ok there, it’s more of a mental consistency and stamina, being able to stay focus for a whole game/match, and not only in patches. But it’s only my second season since I graduated. Sam has got a great all around game, and she is strong so I had to make sure I was making her run just a bit more, instead of going for the shots after the second exchange, wait for the third for example, and also, hold the ball a bit more, because if she knows where the ball is going, she is very good at getting it back… So, holding was very important. Tomorrow, Raneem, the pressure won’t be on me, nothing to lose, and I’ll go out and give it my all…
Never in doubt - as close as it gets between Sam & Alexandra...
Samantha Cornett (CAN) bt Alexandra Fuller (RSA) 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 12-10 (53m)
That was NOT a walk in the park, and there was no way of knowing the end result of this one, as or Sam was ahead score wise, only to get caught up, or there was nothing between them! Intense rallies, very disputed both fighting for the opportunity to finish the point at the front, both hitting hard and deep, nice use of the defensive lob for both, and a nail bitting finish, Alex being up 8/6 in the 5th, while Sam needed two match balls to finally close it down, while a no let at 10/10 seemed to frustrate the South African, 12/10 to the Canadian....
Sam I just find it difficult to stay focus for 5 games, it’s a very hard sport... And yes, maybe I could be fitter... It was the first time we played, but she is one player I have seen playing for a long time. Today she took away my choices, I didn’t have as many options at the front I wanted. I wanted to win from there, but I’m not sure it was actually the right thing to do. I think I could have played the points out, and wait for playing my shots at the right time. But I think I straightened up rather well, and made good use of the heights. I wish I’d done that a bit more but I found it hard to keep my intensity up. Quite tricky. Very happy to get through...
The girls kept the best for last
[10] Joshna Chinappa (Ind) 3-2 Samantha Cornett (Can) 11-9, 6-11, 13-11, 9-11, 11-5 (49m)
This was Joshna’s 350th PSA match and she’ll be happy to get through this tough, very tough first round against Sam Cornett.
In my book – what do I know – this was the nicest match we had so far, and despite suffering from a bad flew and at the end of a long day, I truly and utterly enjoyed every second of the encounter. At some point, the ref thought necessary to ask the girls to clear the ball better. To be honest, they were just two tall ladies trying to play an intense game of squash, played in the right spirit, between two great and fair players… The stats in this match are rather interesting. Normally when you play 8 winners and your opponent only 4, you take the game. But not in this match. In the opener, Sam made 6 errors for 8 winners, Joshna only 4 winners but 1 error and 1 stroke: 11/9 Joshna. Close game all the way through to 6/6, then 9/6 for the Indian, big push from Sam, 9/9, but a stroke and a superb crosscourt later, it’s Joshna, 11/9…. In the second, I felt that Joshna went a bit passive, maybe expecting Sam to make the errors, which this time, she didn’t do: only 6 winners for Sam, 2 errors, same winners than in the 1st game for Josh, but 5 errors this time. The third is MASSIVE. Not a point between them up to 7/7, 10/7 for the Indian after a few errors from the Canadian, 10/7. Sam saves 3 game balls, 10/10. She will save another one, but never managed to set one of her own, it’s Joshna 13/11, 9 winners for the Canadian, but 5 errors, 7 winners for Joshna, 2 errors and a stroke… In the 4th, Sam manages to speed up the pace once again, twisting and turning Joshna beautifully, superb fast squash, high quality, lovely lovely match. At 7/6 for Sam, it’s too close to call but some lovely combination of shots for the Canadian, 10/8, to close out the game 11/9, with 11 winners, 2 errors, only 5 winners for Josh, 2 strokes and not a single error… But the 5ht is all about the Indian. Sam covered an awful lot of ground during the 4 games and it feels that Joshna is the fresher of the two: the winners drop dramatically for the Canadian who cannot be as positive as she was for the whole match, 4 winners for 3 erros, while Joshna soars away, 7 winners for 1 error. A beautiful match to finish the day…

Last few times we played I lost to Sam in 5 so I knew it was going to be tough, regardless. I think I was a bit lucky to get it in the 5th… She likes a good fast pace, and her shots were pretty good today, in the backhand in particular, everything went in. I was struggling to see the ball a bit but as long as I was keep the pace down, I had more time to see what was going on… I played well in patches, I kept the pressure on from the beginning to the end, and in the 5th, I managed to get a good lead and close it out.
