I was deep diving into my drafts and found this. I think it was written before s2 was released.
He had finally found them, after all this time he was finally going to get them out of this hell hole. Things were finally, finally looking up. So why was it that everything was falling apart when they were so close to the freedom they deserve. All they had to do was get out and now the whole planet seemed hell bent on deteriorating around them.
Shiro pushed Matt ahead, urging him to go faster. The gems that lit the way with their natural luminescence were falling out of the walls, being buried in the dirt as the mine shaft began to collapse around them making it difficult to see. But Shiro kept shoving Matt to go faster as he dragged along Sam next to him. The elder man could barely even walk but Shiro was more than willing to take his weight if it meant getting the two of them out of here.
Then the opening was there, he could see daylight just beyond them. They were so close now, so close when suddenly the ground had left Shiro’s feet. Matt had cried out ahead of them as a chunk of the ground below them gave way. With his right hand, Shiro managed to grabbed ahold of a board of the broken rail-line. He gritted his teeth at the strain in his left arm when Sam’s weight pulled against it.
“Hold on Sam, hold on.” They both cried out when the board slipped, just barely hanging on. The world around Shiro seemed to quiet, Matt’s calls above them muffled as he looked down towards his former commander of the mission that had ruined everything. Sam’s panicked featured forced themselves into an almost sympathetic smile.
“I know this isn’t fair of me to ask of you Shiro. You’ve saved Matt’s life and you told me how you’ve been looking after my little Katie. But I need you to promise me.” Shiro felt his chest seize up as he began to shake his head.
“I always thought of you as family you know, I know I can trust you with them. Please take care of my children Shiro.” Shiro tightened his grip on the other man as soon as he felt Sam’s own grip slacken.
“No, no, no, Sam hold on! I can get us both out of here!” He cried as the elder man began to slip.
“That board won’t hold us and you need both your arm to be able to climb out of here. You need to live Shiro, take care of yourself please, for me. “ Sam closed his eyes as he slipped free of Shiro’s grasp.
Matt’s cry above him was drown out by his own as he watched the man fall into the black abyss below him. Shiro could only sit there, dangling by a board that could hardly stand his weight. What had happened felt so unreal, how did it get to this? Reality crashed back onto him as Matt’s desperate cries continued.
Slowly he was able to pull himself back upon the path they were following. Without words he grabbed onto Matt and pulled him along.
