“Then I read the book [Danny, the Champion of the World] and I loved it, and I talked to my wife about Sam, our ten-year-old, doing it. She said ‘no, no, no, he can’t possibly do it, he’s a boy, he’s ten, he has to be a boy, he has to go to school and he can’t go working in films, it would be appalling’, and then I said ‘well, it actually might be quite fun, because we are going to film it about half an hour from where we live, so he can live at home, and he’d be working with me’ – which I thought would be something he likes to do…”
