Fortress Festival 2017: Day 1
Fortress Festival established itself as one of the best music festivals in the DFW metroplex after just one year. It started Saturday with an unforeseeable setback, expected bad weather forced the team behind the festival to push the start from 3 to 5pm which unfortunately bumped the fest’s first three acts. The bad weather missed Fort Worth and it was pretty much smooth sailing through the rest of the windy festival weekend. Fort Worth’s spacious cultural District was the perfect location for the festival’s diverse lineup.
Dallas’ rising star Sam Lao kicked things off at the Modern Stage in the reflecting pool at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. The festival’s unique partnership with the Modern provided a beautiful stage and extended access to the Modern’s galleries. The larger companion Will Rogers Stage area featured vendors, food trucks, and a huge area for the crowd. Rapper and experimental producer Blue, The Misfit. started the night off on the main stage with a polished and energetic performance showing why he is one of Dallas’ favorite live performers. The night continued with great sets from Burning Hotels, Houndmouth, Wolf Parade, Flying Lotus, S U R V I V E, and day one headliners, Run The Jewels. Pictured above are Sam Lao, Blue, The Misfit., Houndmouth, Flying Lotus and Run The Jewels. Keep an eye out for day two pictures in the next couple of days.
Black Boys Can Read || Season Finale w/ Sam Lao & Trina Mai
“Black Girls Can Read”
• • •
In this last episode, I’m joined by Sam Lao and Trina Mai. Watch as they perform self written pieces and discuss how reading and writing has helped them throughout their lives. I started this series to show that reading isn’t just for “nerds”. That black people like books too. That you can be cool AND educated. Hopefully, I’ve done just that.
This episode was directed and edited by @smn.phx, @jmyfi, and myself. Shot at Fort Work in Downtown Dallas.
